STUDY ABROAD IN THE FAR EAST:   INDIA

Delhi Hyderabad

Program:  IES Center, Jawaharlal Nehru University / IES
Location:  Delhi, India

Is this Program Right For You?  Delhi, the seat of the Indian government, is a city of contrasts. The winding streets and bazaars of Old Delhi and the magnificent monuments built by Delhi’s Moghul rulers beginning in the twelfth century illustrate the city's long history and tradition. The stately governmental buildings and wide boulevards of British New Delhi have been the home of the Indian capital since 1911. Modern office buildings, museums, theaters, night spots, and cafes, as well as rapidly growing suburbs, testify to a contemporary boom. This is a city where streets are shared by modern cars, scooters, rickshaws, motorcycles, and even cows, and where men in turbans and dhotis share sidewalks with men in modern business suits and women in jeans walk alongside women in saris.

The Courses/Program:  IES Delhi offers a rigorous academic program that focuses on contemporary India in its cultural and historical context. The program offers a broad range of courses in the humanities and Social Sciences where students can also pursue their academic interests by taking courses at a local university in Delhi. In addition to a 2-week intensive Hindi course taken during orientation, students are strongly encouraged to take at least one of the two following IES courses: Cities of Delhi or a Hindi Language course. The Cities of Delhi introduces students to the many layers in the environment where they will be living and studying, and provides an opportunity for individualized field research in an area of the student’s interest. Field study is a central feature of all Delhi course offerings. The Hindi Language course offers students the opportunity to gain a higher language level, enabling them to better immerse themselves in Indian culture. IES also offers several electives. Students must also enroll in at least two courses at local university partnered with IES, in addition to the IES courses. University courses are available in a wide variety of fields including Fine Arts, the Social Sciences, and the humanities. University courses are taught in English. Students can also elect to participate in community-based internship placements at local NGOs or service organizations in Delhi. In addition, field trips to locations such as Kerala (a coastal state in southwestern India) and Varanasi (a famous holy city on the banks of the ganges River) solidify classroom learning through firsthand experience and cultural immersion. The IES Center is located in Delhi near some of the city’s most important monuments, and includes computer facilities and a small library to support IES courses.

Housing:  The group residence is a large, comfortable townhouse located across from a park in a middle class community in south Delhi.  Students live in eight double rooms, each with an adjoining shared bath, on the first and second floors of the residence. Both floors also have a common student room.  There is also a basement level in the residence that will be available for student use, providing ample space for yoga, reading, and viewing DVDs.  A Residence Director lives on-site with the students, and manages activities and outings that enable students to further experience life in Delhi.  Breakfast and dinner are served daily in the residence. The residence is a 15 minute taxi ride from the IES center and 20 minutes from JNU.

A limited number of homestays are available for IES students throughout South Delhi. This is an ideal way to experience first-hand Indian day-to-day life and the culture that shapes it. In homestays, students receive breakfast and one other meal per day. Students are placed in homestays after orientation, once the IES staff have assessed in person their individual needs and preferences.

Program:  University of Hyderabad / CIEE
Location:  Hyderabad, India

Is This Program Right For You? The program is designed for students with a desire to understand the complexities and paradoxes of the world's largest democracy. Students have the opportunity to explore India's cultural and religious diversity while experiencing the impact of modernity upon tradition. This program is also ideal for a student who would like to do a service project, participate in volunteer work or undertake an internship.

The CIEE Study Center provides an opportunity to gain insights into the challenges that face contemporary India. The orientation in Delhi, combined with the core course, enables participants to grasp the historic and cultural density of thelargest democracy in the world. The location, situated between the North and South, and Hindu and Muslim India, ensures that students gain insight into linguistic, religious, and cultural diversity. The wide range of academic offerings allows students to select courses related to the region according to their various interests.

The University of Hyderabad, now over twenty-five years old, was the first federally funded university to be established in the culturally and linguistically rich southern part of India. The University has over 200 faculty and 2,100 full time students in eight schools: Chemistry, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Computer and Information Sciences, Physics, Humanities, Social Sciences, Management Studies, Performing Arts, Fine Arts and Communication.

The Courses/Program: The program offers students a combination of specially designed courses and regular university courses in such fields as history, literature, philosophy, sociology, communications, management studies, anthropology, dance, art history, cinema, political science, economics, natural sciences, and Hindi, Telugu, and Urdu languages. All faculty members have experience teaching American students, either in the United States or in India. Although there is no language prerequisite for participation in the program, all students are required to take one Indian language. Hindi, Telugu and Urdu are among the languages that are offered. In addition to language study, students are required to take the core course on contemporary Indian society and culture, and two other courses.

The University of Hyderabad is a graduate-level Indian university. This designation is somewhat different than in the U.S. system but should not provide a barrier to undergraduates. The B.A. degree in India, as in Ireland and Australia, is three years long. Thus, M.A. students at the University of Hyderabad in their first year of study are roughly at the equivalent level to a senior at a U.S. university. However, due to the prerequisites needed, most U.S. students are not able to enroll in subjects from the math and science departments. CIEE students take their classes primarily from the arts, social sciences and humanities departments.

Assessment: Students are required to attend all classes held in each course and participate, to the satisfaction of the professor, in practical study-seminars. The examination system is designed to systematically test the student’s progress in class, laboratory, and field work through continuous evaluation. Students are given periodic tests, short quizzes, homework assignments, seminars, tutorials, and term papers, in addition to the examination at the end of each semester. The final result in each course is calculated on the basis of this continuous assessment.

Housing: Students are housed in shared rooms in recently refurbished dormitories, with access to modern toilets and bathing facilities, at the Study in India Program Guest House for Foreign Students. The housing is excellent but students need to recognize that they may not have access to all of the facilities they are used to in the United States. The accommodation is at a level reserved for visiting guests and professors. The program fee includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food is of a very good standard with many vegetarian options. Students should understand, however, that the food is Indian, not North American. Students also have access to kitchen facilities, so they can prepare their own meals if they so desire.
