STUDY ABROAD IN THE FAR EAST:     KOREA

Program:  Yonsei University / CIEE
Location:  Seoul, Korea

Is this Program for you?  As the oldest university in Korea, Yonsei University was first established in 1885. Its educational mission is based on the Christian principles of truth and freedom. It derives its motto from the Bible, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32), emphasizing that truth is to put love into practice through sacrifice and service, and that this is true freedom.  It is regarded as the most forward looking, internationalized, and comprehensive university in Korea.  Based on its tradition of academic excellence, intercultural environment, and commitment to internationalization, Yonsei University continues to attract leading international students throughout the academic year and during the summer session.

Yonsei University is the leading institution of international education in Korea with over 420 partner universities in 42 countries around the world.  It is designed to provide quality education to students from each corner of the world and to teach students about Korea and its rich culture first hand.    The goals of this program are to provide international students with quality education while they learn about the Korean culture.  This program brings students together from all parts of the globe and allows them to not only learn about Korea, but also about each others’ culture.  Several Korean and Asian courses are available in the fields of business, law, psychology, and many more.

Just minutes away from the economic, political, and cultural centers of the Seoul’s metropolitan area, Yonsei has 18 graduate schools, 19 colleges, and 111 subsidiary institutions. With its student body comprised of the top 1 percent of high school graduates in Korea, Yonsei University is proud of its long history as the leading institution of higher education in Korea, as well as of its reputation as the most international university in Korea.

The Courses/Program:  Established in 1966, the Division of International Education and Exchange (DIEE) was revamped in the fall of 2000, which coincided with its move to the newly opened New Millennium Hall.  International students have access to brand new computer facilities, as well as a specialized library, and may stay in its newly remodeled international dormitory. The DIEE office offers a wide range of services which include approximately 50 undergraduate courses taught in English, Korean language lessons through the Korean Language Institute, and regular courses taught in Korean in other departments for students with Korean fluency.  In addition, international students may take classes within Yonsei’s regular undergraduate program, taught in English, in which they will be learning side-by-side with some of the country’s best students.  A select number of incoming exchange students can also take courses taught in English at the Graduate School of International Studies and the Global MBA Program.

Additionally, a number of university clubs and programs are available for international students allowing them to have a better understanding of traditional culture and university culture in Korea.  These include Mentors Club in which students are paired with a regular Yonsei student, Language Exchange in which students are able to learn the Korean language while teaching their own in return, the International Yonsei Community (I.Y.C.), various sports teams, a Host Family program, and a Home Stay program.  Moreover, the “Global Lounge”, at the center of the campus, is a place where international students and Korean students can meet for coffee or check out the latest activities available during the semester.

Housing:  Students have two housing options.  1) The International House offers western-styled dormitory housing on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Meals are not included; however, there are an endless number of inexpensive restaurants and cafes available near campus.  2)  Students may live with their relatives in a homestay environment while on the program.
