STUDY ABROAD IN THE FAR EAST:     VIETNAM

Program:  International University / CIEE
Location:  Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Is This Program Right For You?  The program in Vietnam is designed for students interested in developing a solid foundation in the economics, political science, and history of Vietnam and its relationship to its neighboring countries while immersing themselves in the local communities of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi during the fall semester and Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap, Cambodia in the spring semester. A riverine society that formed a natural meeting point between the great world civilizations of China and India, Ho Chi Minh City has for centuries been a melting pot of ethnic Chinese, Khmers, Viets, Indians, and Chams. Over the past hundred and fifty years, colonialism and the Cold War brought heavy French and American influences to the city. The result today is a bustling, multilingual metropolis where, amid modern skyscrapers and exquisite French colonial architecture, you can enjoy espresso and croissants alongside Vietnam’s famous pho noodle soup. Ho Chi Minh International University, a division of the Vietnam National University, is the first public international university of Vietnam, and its faculty is 60% Vietnamese and 40% invited foreign instructors. Students study at the Hanoi College of Social Sciences and Humanities for the last five weeks of the fall program. The Center for Khmer Studies where students spend the lastfour weeks of the spring program, promotes research, teaching, and public service in the social sciences, arts, and humanities.

The Courses/Program:  The CIEE Study Center at Ho Chi Minh International University offers students the opportunity to gain meaningful insight into Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos through studies in language, history, culture, literature, economics, and society. All courses offered provide a deeper understanding of the region while encouraging interaction with local scholars, students, and citizens. The program is located in Ho Chi Minh City. In the fall, students spend the last 5 weeks of the program in Hanoi while spring students spend 4 weeks in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The goal of the 5-week course in Hanoi is for students to gain an understanding of northern Vietnamese cultures, including those of minority hill tribes, and to be able to delineate aspects of the relationship between northern and southern Vietnam which have historically sometimes led to tragic conflict, and at other times to fruitful collaboration and growth. The goal of the 4-week course in Siem Reap is for students to gain an understanding of Cambodia’s history and culture with particular focus on the causes and effects of the genocide of 1975–1979. Students are encouraged to approach Cambodia as a case study for several of the world’s most pressing geopolitical problems, including nation-building in societies recently at war, confronting radicalism, combating official corruption, and promoting democracy and stable economic development in smaller, less-developed countries. Students attend classes Monday through Friday.

Language classes are a mandatory and key component of the curriculum. Area studies elective courses meet twice weekly while the required area studies courses in Hanoi and Siem Reap meet daily. Students are required to take a course in Vietnamese language, one required core course, and three area studies courses taught in English while in Ho Chi Minh City. Fall semester students take Gender and Society in the Countries of Indochina Today during their 5-week stay in Hanoi. Spring semester students take Nation-Building in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge Genocide during their 4-week stay in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The language courses meet intensively for the first five weeks of the program.

Housing:  In Ho Chi Minh City, students either live in a guest house near campus with a Vietnamese roommate, or in a homestay. In Hanoi, students live with other CIEE students in a dormitory for international students. In Siem Reap, students live with other CIEE students in an international-standard guest house. Rooms in both locations have a private bathroom, air conditioner, and refrigerator.
