Auckland Christchurch Dunedin

Program:  University of Auckland / Arcadia
Location:  Auckland, New Zealand

Is this Program Right for You?  Imagine studying at an internationally-renowned teaching and research university, located in a modern city that is known for its multicultural population and physical beauty.  Auckland, or the “City of Sails,” is a large and cosmopolitan city nestled between two harbors.  A vibrant arts scene enriches the city with theatre, music, and art.  It offers easy access to outdoor adventure, including visits to the geyser and mud pools of Rotorua, located halfway between Auckland and Wellington.  More than 37,000 acres of parkland are within a comfortable distance of the city.

Before being settled by European colonists, Auckland was an important place for Maori intertribal relations; the remnants of Maori villages are still visible on the volcanic cones that dot the area.  Today, nearly one-third of New Zealand’s population lives in Auckland, and immigrants have added their cultures to the diverse flavors of the city.  In addition to its Maori population, Auckland is home to people from Europe and Asia as well as the largest Polynesian population in the world.

A bustling city campus just a few minutes from downtown Auckland, the University of Auckland is a great environment for the independent student.  The City Campus lies within easy reach of downtown, but is buffered from the city by Albert Park and the Auckland Domain.  By joining one of the more than 100 clubs and societies, you’ll find it easy to fit into the rhythm of campus life. The Auckland University Students’ Association sponsors a full range of social, political, cultural, and athletic activities, including more than a hundred clubs and societies.

Dunedin, the second-largest city in the South Island, stretches gracefully across steep hills that sweep down to the head of the long inlet that forms Otago Harbour.  This charming Victorian and Edwardian city by the sea was founded in 1848, and with the discovery of gold in central Otago in 1861, it rapidly became the largest, richest, and most influential city in New Zealand.  Today Dunedin maintains a thriving industry centered around its busy port.  Dunedin is a city of gorgeous views and wonderful natural beauty.

You may enroll for the full New Zealand academic year (Feb—Nov), the US Academic Year (Jul—Jun), or a single semester.
