STUDY ABROAD IN THE AMERICAS:     ARGENTINA

Buenos Aires (IFSA-Butler, CIEE, IES, Middlebury)
San Miguel de Tucuman

Program:  Argentine Universities Program / IFSA-Butler
Location:  Buenos Aires, Argentina

Is this Program Right for You? This program, in one of Latin America’s most cosmopolitan cities, offers students the possibility of taking courses at four top but very different universities: Universidad de Buenos Aires, Universidad Católica Argentina, Universidad del Salvador, and Universidad Torcuato Di Tella.  In addition, participants can choose to enroll in an optional research-based track at the Fundación Simón Rodrígues or participate in a non-credit internship. All university classes are integrated with regular degree-seeking students, and all classes are taught in Spanish.

The Courses/Program: The course work done at any of the four universities in the program’s roster is supplemented by a mandatory Spanish Language & Argentine Culture course programmed by IFSA-Butler offered at the program’s center.  Additional courses at the center are also available.  These include a course on Argentine State & Society and one in Contemporary Argentine & Latin American Literature. All of the center courses are taught in Spanish by an Argentine professor. Some of the strongest departments for course work to be done at the universities are history, political science, economics, international studies, international business, philosophy, social science, and literature.

All students are assigned a tutor to help with language and academic questions related to course work at the university. Students and tutors are matched up by discipline. Participants meet with their tutor at least once a month, but often times meetings are scheduled on a weekly basis.

Volunteer and service-learning opportunities are also available.  Past service learning opportunities have included: working with The Buenos Aires Herald, Argentina’s premier English-language daily newspaper; the commercial section of the United States Embassy; and non-governmental organizations, such as Puna Huasi, an organization that deals with Aboriginal issues.

Housing:  Students live with Argentine families carefully selected by the program staff. Participating families range from elderly widows to young professional couples to single parent families. Regardless of their structure, families provide a new home in the adopted city and introduce participants to Argentine society. Living with an Argentine family is an excellent way to become integrated into the culture. Host families live throughout Buenos Aires and Mendoza, so students commute to class by public transportation.

Program:  FLACSO and Universidad de Buenos Aires / CIEE
Location:  Buenos Aires, Argentina

Is This Program Right For You? This program is designed to help students with a strong command of the Spanish language and interest in social sciences and humanities gain an in-depth knowledge of Argentine and Spanish-speaking South American politics, economics, history, literature and society.  All courses are taught in Spanish.  The goals of the program are to provide students with a critical appreciation of Argentina and its importance in Latin America from the perspective of the social sciences and humanities. This is achieved through courses offered, as well as by cultural trips and volunteer internship or community service options in the city.

The Courses/Program: This CIEE Study Center, established in 1993, includes specialized courses at Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) and regular courses at both the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) and the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA). This arrangement allows CIEE students to combine the specialized, more personalized “think tank” atmosphere of FLACSO, with the vibrant Argentine university life of UBA and UCA. Given the acknowledged excellence of the faculty and course offerings at all institutions, the program is suitable for advanced undergraduate  students with strong language skills and a background in the social sciences or Latin American studies. The semester program begins with a two-week Spanish language class. During the semester, students select among special CIEE courses offered at FLACSO, and courses from UBA and UCA.

During the second semester, academic year participants can take two other courses at FLACSO or take all of their courses at UBA and/or UCA. Second semester students may do an independent study or an internship through FLACSO. Depending on language competency, students may continue their language study during the semester in regular UBA language classes.

Host Institutions: The Argentine branch of FLACSO hosts the program. Founded in 1957 through a UNESCO initiative and presently active in 10 countries, FLACSO sponsors the largest, most important, and most prestigious teaching program in the social sciences in Latin America.

In addition to courses at FLACSO, students in the program are eligible to take selected courses at the Facultad de Ciencias Sociales of UBA, Argentina’s preeminent national university with some 150,000 students. Only students with a very solid grounding in philosophy, history, or literature may also take courses at the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras.

Courses can also be taken at UCA, a private university rankedamong the top universities in the nation. UCA facilities and course offerings complement the already academically challenging program by giving students a broader class selection, as well as the opportunity to experience a very different type of higher education. The main UCA houses the schools of social sciences and economics, law and political science, art and music, physics, mathematics and engineering, philosophy and letters, biomedical ethics, agrarian science, theology, and social communication, journalism and publicity. Approximately 3,400 students matriculate at the new, unified, and central campus located in Puerto Madera. Course size is usually small, ranging from ten to 30 students on average, although some lecture classes might be larger. Students who opt to take classes at UCA can also utilize its excellent, well-stocked library and access computer and internet terminals throughout the university campus.

Housing: Housing and breakfast are included in the program fee. Students live in private homes or in student residencias with non-U.S. roommates. Homestay hosts come from various lifestyles that can be matched with a student’s preferred living environment. The student residencias are double occupancy with a native Spanish speaker, with private or shared baths.  Students are responsible for their own lunch and dinner. Those living with families may arrange dinner for an additional fee. Student residencias have cooking facilities. For academic year students following the July-July program, housing and meals during the December-March break are not included in the CIEE fee and are the responsibility of the student.

Program:  Middlebury Buenos Aires Center and Argentine Universities / Middlebury College
Location:  Buenos Aires, Argentina

Is this Program Right for You?  The Middlebury School in Argentina is designed to immerse every student as completely as possible in both the language and the culture of Argentina. All course work is taught in Spanish. The program strongly encourages students to pursue co-curricular activities in which they have a particular interest. Students have participated on various sports teams, volunteered in schools and social services, joined musical ensembles, interned in businesses — even joined a newspaper staff and a circus! Because the experience of a full academic year abroad is greater — linguistically, culturally, and academically — than the experience gained during a shorter period, Middlebury College strongly recommends that undergraduates enroll for the full year whenever possible.

Argentina, the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, known locally as "The Land of the Six Continents" for its geographic and climatic diversity, has a long and fascinating history and is a major economic and political power in South America. The capital, Buenos Aires, famous for its 47 historically and culturally distinctive neighborhoods such as La Boca and La Recoleta, is, at the same time the most cosmopolitan city on the continent. The city is renowned for its parks and squares, which give it a sense of spaciousness. A major economic and political center, it is also a lively and cultured city with a European feel. Tango was, of course, invented here and is today a virtual obsession; that and a wide variety of other musical styles are at the very core of the local, "porteño" culture along with the "gaucho" heritage of freedom and independence. Yet, Buenos Aires is also home to innumerable art galleries, museums, historical and architectural monuments, theaters, movie theaters, classical music groups and orchestras, ballet, and opera, while the ubiquitous sidewalk cafés offer unparalleled opportunities for people-watching.

The Courses/Program:  While in Buenos Aires, students may take courses at one of three of Argentina's most respected universities: the Universidad del Salvador, the Universidad de Buenos Aires, and the Universidad Torcuato di Tella. Students have the option to study political science and sociology at UBA, Ciencias Sociales; literature, philosophy, geography, history, anthropology, and studio art at UBA, Filosofía y Letras; biology, physics, music, religion, psychology, and studio art at Universidad del Salvador; or economics political science and history at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Students choose their university courses in consultation with the School in Latin America staff and their Latin American university’s international office, based on their language ability and academic preparation.

Students normally enroll in two to four university courses per semester alongside their Latin American counterparts; the Cuaderno/Caderno Latinoameriacno, a journal course taught by local faculty and designed to help students process and analyze their experience in Latin America through a series of structured written assignments; and a credit-bearing internship. Internships are available in many different fields and students have worked in many institutions in the arts, education, healthcare, women’s advocacy, local government, economics and social research and city planning. The program director also arranges one major excursion, which is voluntary.

Students are asked to adhere to the spirit of the Language Pledge, which is a commitment to use Italian at all times. All students are strongly encouraged to spend a summer at a Middlebury College Language School before embarking on a semester or a year abroad. Students have found that this gives them the skills and confidence they need to live more independently in the host country and to enter more easily into co-curricular activities that bring them into direct contact with people in the host country.

Housing:  Arrangements for accommodations in local homes are made by the Director and his assistant. Students are generally matched with families based on preferences and are not permitted to share housing accommodations with other U.S. students.

500 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, San Miguel de Tucumán offers another option for study in Argentina. Tucumán is the vibrant economic and cultural center of the NOA--Andean Northwestern Region--and neighboring countries. Known as "the garden of the republic," the city of 400,000 is where Argentina claimed its independence in 1816. 18 different microclimates exist within the area surrounding the city, creating a diversity of plants and animals and a unique setting for study. Close to the eastern face of the Andes, Tucumán provides access to several national parks and a wide variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and mountaineering. Andean indigenous groups are also more strongly represented in this region of the country than elsewhere and there are numerous traces of their cultural impact, both on contemporary life as well as in the many archaeological sites in the area.

The Courses/Program:  Students take all classes at the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán. Founded in 1912, the UNT is today a modern university offering its 43,000 students twelve Facultades and several Escuelas and Institutos Universitarios in which to study. It is the intellectual and cultural center of the NOA--Andean Northwestern Region--and neighboring countries, and combines academic excellence, a commitment to regional development, and international visibility. A full range of courses is offered in the humanities and social sciences, with particular strengths in anthropology and archaeology. Areas such as Medicine and Applied Science are at the top of the national ranking.
