Program: Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo / CIEE
Location: São Paulo, Brazil
Is This Program Right For You? This program is targeted to students with at least two years of college-level Spanish or one year of Portuguese or the equivalent who want to improve their Portuguese language skills and knowledge of contemporary Brazil while at the same time being able to matriculate in a broad range of course offerings in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Participants should be interested in living in a large, cosmopolitan South American city.
The three main goals of this program are to increase students’ oral and written Portuguese language skills; to facilitate students’ knowledge of contemporary Brazil and the São Paulo region; and to provide students with the opportunity to take a broad range of courses in numerous disciplines.
The Pontifícia Universidade Católica (PUC) was founded in 1946 and has 22,000 students and roughly 2,000 professors. It maintains a research tradition which is unique among private institutions of higher learning in Brazil. Among PUC’s well known intellectuals are Paulo Freire (a famous educational theorist) and Floretan Fernandes (sociologist who was instrumental in the creation of the Worker’s Party). PUC had an important role in the resistance of the dictatorship regime in Brazil (1964-1984) as well as participation in Brazil’s re-democratization process. In 1977 PUC hosted the first meeting of UNE – União Nacional dos Estudantes (National Student Union), which had been forbidden by the military regime. In the 1980’s it was the first Brazilian university to elect its Rector with direct vote by students, faculty and workers. PUC is located in a residential area called Perdizes, near downtown São Paulo, with good transportation access. Life and commerce in this neighborhood revolves around PUC. There are several bookstores, restaurants, stores, hairdressers and fitness gyms. The CIEE office is located only 1 block from the PUC campus.
The Courses/Program: The program was established in 1973 and has been administered by CIEE since 1989. The semester program begins with a five-week Intensive Language and Culture Program (ILCP), held in Salvador da Bahia for the fall semester and in São Paulo at PUC for the spring semester. During this 5-week period, students are introduced to the country, culture, and academic program and receive practical information about living in Brazil. The ILCP is designed to develop linguistic skills as well as promote greater comprehension of contemporary Brazilian realities and prepare students for academic work at the University.
During the ILCP, students with a background in Portuguese are placed in intensive Portuguese language classes at either the intermediate or advanced level. Students with a background in only Spanish are placed in an intensive Portuguese language class for Spanish speakers (assuming there are five students or more). After the ILCP, students continue to take Portuguese language courses, unless they are exempt by testing results, as well as a required core course both under CIEE auspices. The core course has lectures and discussions on Brazilian history, literature, economics, race relations, and current social movements.
Students choose up to three electives from among a special CIEE course entitled “Cultural Manifestations and Social-Political Conflicts in Brazil” and a wide range of direct enrollment courses at PUC for which they meet the prerequisites. The departments include: Accounting, Anthropology, Business Administration, Economy, Geography, History, International Relations, Literature, Politics, Sociology and Tourism.
Housing: Housing and two meals per day are included in the program fee. One meal per day (usually lunch or dinner) is not included in the fee and is the responsibility of the student. During orientation, students are housed together in comfortable lodging, usually a hotel. During the five-week Intensive Language and Culture Program and the rest of the semester, students are placed in Brazilian homestays. Academic year students may share an apartment with Brazilian students during their second semester. For academic year students, housing during the three-month break is not included in the CIEE fee and is the responsibility of the student.
