STUDY ABROAD IN THE AMERICAS:     CHILE

Santiago  (CIEE, Syracuse)
Valparaiso

Program:  Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Universidad de Chile and Universidad de Santiago
                   / CIEE

Location:  Santiago, Chile

Is This Program Right For You? The program is designed for advanced Spanish language students from a wide variety of academic disciplines who are motivated to matriculate into regular university courses and are interested in learning more about Chilean life and society.

The program aims to provide students who enjoy urban life with firsthand knowledge of contemporary issues and cultural patterns in Chile, accomplished through an orientation program, supplemental cultural activities throughout the semester, and Chilean homestays. Its goals are also to meet the academic needs of students through course matriculation at two outstanding universities in Santiago: the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and the Universidad de Chile.

Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile was founded in 1888 and is the country’s leading private university with 18,000 students and 1,800 faculties. Courses are offered at 17 schools. There are four campuses in and around Santiago.  Universidad de Chile was founded in 1842 and is the country’s preeminent public university with 20,000 students and 5,000 faculties. It offers courses in 13 Faculties. The University has campuses throughout Santiago.

The Courses/Program: Founded in 1992, the CIEE Study Center in Santiago provides a supportive environment for students who have at least six semesters of college-level Spanish (or the equivalent) to directly enroll in two of Chile’s major universities. This program was the first in Chile to offer students the possibility of selecting courses at more than one Chilean institution of higher learning. Given the array of disciplines and courses available to participants, the program is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students with strong Spanish language skills.

A required Contemporary Chile course is offered at the beginning of each semester. Following this course, students enroll in regular university courses for which they meet the prerequisites at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad de Chile.  Depending on the level and interest of students, they may also continue their Spanish language study during the semester. There are two different Spanish course options: Advanced Spanish Language and Advanced Spanish Written Expression and Composition.

In general, emphasis is placed on memorization and note taking in most classes, and it can take a while to learn how to study effectively in the Chilean system, especially in terms of acquiring reading material and knowing what professors expect. Chilean classmates are often an excellent source of help. The average class size is 20 to 30 students. In many classes, CIEE students may be the only foreigners.

For academic year students, it is possible to obtain a University-issued Minor in Latin American Studies Certificate by studying and passing six-eight courses related to Latin American studies, offered at various faculties.

Housing: Students live in private Chilean homes. Housing, three meals a day, and laundry are included in the program fee, except during the orientation period during which lunch is at the student’s expense. Academic year students are responsible for housing and meals during the break between semesters. For the February to December program, this is approximately two weeks. Program:  Syracuse Santiago Center / Syracuse University
Location:  Santiago, Chile

Is This Program Right For You?  From the top of the Andes to the Southern Cone, this unique, two-site program is your gateway to the tremendous cultural, historical, political, and ethnic diversity of South America.  Begin your learning adventure in Cuenca, Ecuador, where you’ll advance your Spanish language skills among the largely indigenous people of this charming city.  Then you’re bound for Santiago, Chile’s vibrant capital.  The city boasts over six million residents and a wealth of cultural and educational resources, including its prestigious public university, la Universidad de Chile.

The Syracuse dual-track program allows students across language levels to customize their very own Latin America learning experiences.  Whether you have completed just one year of college-level Spanish (Track 1) or more than two years (Track 2), the program is designed to maximize immersion and language acquisition through home stays, bilingual coursework, interdisciplinary field study, and enrollment in regular semester classes taught in Spanish at the University of Chile.

The Courses/Program:
Track 1 students begin their program in Cuenca, Ecuador, with four weeks of intensive language immersion at the Centers for Interamerican Studies.  They then travel to Santiago, where they join other program students for the bilingual field study seminar, Contemporary Issues in Chile and Latin America.  They continue language study in Santiago and enroll in at least one class taught in Spanish at the University of Chile.

Track 2 students travel directly to Santiago for the Chile semester program.  Track 2 is for those with at least two years of college-level Spanish whose goal is to develop Spanish language expertise in one or more disciplines.  Students take a Spanish language exam upon arrival and are advised by the University of Chile’s language coordinator about which courses are appropriate for their language level.  Track 2 students also take the bilingual field study seminar, Contemporary Issues in Chile and Latin America.

Housing:  Living arrangements in both Cuenca and Santiago are provided by local host families, with special efforts made to place students based on personal preferences.  While in Cuenca, students will attend intensive language classes at the Centers for Interamerican Studies, which is located in the colonial heart of the city.  Santiago’s infrastructure is efficient and modern, and cultural options are on par with those of any cosmopolitan world city.

Duration/Deadlines:
• Fall Semester/Academic Year Duration: About 17 weeks / Application Deadline: March 10th
• Spring Semester Duration: About 17 weeks / Application Deadline: October 15th

Requirements:
• Track 1: Completion of two semesters of college-level Spanish (the equivalent of SPA 101 and 102). Minimum 3.0 GPA required.

The program fee also includes an 11-day field study seminar and covers hotel, field trips, and accommodations with breakfast daily.  Track 1 students enroll in a four-week pre-semester language program in Cuenca, Ecuador and pay an additional program fee to cover orientation, program activities, and accommodation in private homes with breakfast, lunch, and evening meals seven days a week.  Visit suabroad.syr.edu for more information.  Please note: The information on this sheet is for reference purposes only.  It is your responsibility to confirm details and deadlines.
