Location: San Salvador, El Salvador
Is this Program Right for You? Casa de la Solidaridad is an academic initiative between the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), the University of Central America (UCA) in El Salvador, and Santa Clara University. The mission of the Casa is the promotion of justice and solidarity through the creation of a meaningful academic experience where you can integrate rigorous academic study with direct immersion with the poor of El Salvador.
Each semester, an outstanding group of students live together in a learning community near the University of Central America. You do not have to be Catholic or Christian to participate in the Casa de la Solidaridad, but you must be open to reflection on the spiritual and religious dimensions of life.
This experience offers you many opportunities for personal and shared reflection, spiritual development, and collaborative academic learning. In addition, you’ll have the chance to talk with and learn from policy makers and business leaders, academic and religious leaders, human rights activists and community organizers, members of women’s organizations and union workers, and the poor and the marginalized of El Salvador.
The Courses/Program: The curriculum of the Casa de la Solidaridad is designed for most undergraduate majors, enabling you to meet your graduation requirements with academic credit granted through Santa Clara University. Your classes will be taught by some of the best professors at the University of Central America and in San Salvador - experts in their fields and on topics related to Central America.
The learning style is integrated and interdisciplinary, examining the social, political, and economic reality of the people of El Salvador. The academic curriculum incorporates traditional classroom activities, participative research, and interaction with the local community. The core courses at Casa de la Solidaridad include: Latin American Theology, Field Placement/Praxis, Advanced Spanish I or Advanced Spanish Conversation, The Political Structures and Processes in El Salvador and Central America, The Sociology of Public Communications in El Salvador and Salvadoran Literature. All students take one Spanish class or an elective at the UCA if fluent in Spanish. All students also take the Field Placement/Praxis and the Latin American Theology classes. For your fourth and fifth classes, you will have a choice in taking either Political Structures and Processes in El Salvador and Central America, or the Sociology of Public Communications, or Salvadoran Literature to meet your academic needs.
