Program: Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru, Universidad del Pacifico / CIEE
Location: Lima, Peru
Is This Program Right For You? Lima’s colonial legacy is reflected in the location of its Main Square (Plaza de Armas) on the banks of the city’s major river; in its numerous ornately constructed baroque churches; and in its historical homes with elaborately carved wooden balconies. Lima is a city with eight million inhabitants and neighborhoods sprawling out from the colonial center, peppered with Incan and pre-Incan archeological sites. One need only to listen to Peruvian music, eat Peruvian food, and learn about its fascinating history and culture to observe the blending of indigenous, African, Spanish, European, and Asian cultures. The Universidad del Pacífico (UP) was founded in 1962 by a group of Peruvian entrepreneurs. UP is a private Jesuit university and well-known in the areas of accounting, business, and economics. There are approximately 1,600 undergraduate and 500 graduate students enrolled, with a teaching staff of 150. CIEE students have access to the University library and its computer lab and student cafeteria. UP is located in the Jesus María neighborhood, a downtown district with many restaurants and Internet cafés. The Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), founded in 1917, is the oldest established private higher educational institution in Peru. The impressive 90-acre campus houses faculty buildings, the central library, computer facilities, the sports center, student cafeterias, and even an archaeological dig site. Nearly 17,000 students study at the PUCP. The University has many research centers, including the Institute for Democracy and Humans Rights. The campus is located in the district of San Miguel, a busy area with enormous commercial activity.
The Courses/Program: The CIEE Study Center in Lima provides students with three program options:
Language & Culture: This option affords students who have between 2 and 4 semesters of college-level Spanish or the equivalent an opportunity to focus on Spanish language acquisition. In addition to Spanish language courses, students explore the nuances of Peruvian culture, history, and society including issues of mestizaje, ethnic identity, politics, globalization, and development through the English-taught CIEE courses at PUCP.
Business & Society: This option is designed for students with five or more semesters of college-level Spanish and a background in business [coursework in micro- or Macro-economics, accounting, finance, management, marketing, or statistics]. Participants study, observe, and even participate in Peru’s economy and business management practices while improving their Spanish at UP.
Liberal Arts: This option is designed for students with five or more semesters of college-level Spanish and a wide variety of majors. Participants directly enroll in regular university courses at PUCP in a wide variety of subjects alongside Peruvian students and learn first-hand about contemporary culture in bustling Lima.
Housing: Students live in private Peruvian homes with families. Housing, three meals per day, and laundry costs are included in the program fee. Academic year students, on the July–July program, are responsible for housing and meals during the break between semesters, which is two and a half months.

Program: Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru / IFSA-Butler
Location: Lima, Peru
Is this Program Right for You? Founded in 1535, Lima has become one of the most cosmopolitan and import. A modern city with striking social contrasts, Lima still retains much of its colonial elegance, even though its growing population has added big-city bustle and expansive neighborhoods to the area’s layout.
Situated on a large, 100-acre campus in Lima, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú offers outstanding academics in a beautiful setting composed of modern buildings, picturesque gardens, and even archaeological excavations. PUCP is a highly selective university with a vibrant academic life that includes international congresses and seminars throughout the year, a diverse and international student body, and some of the best professors in Perú.
The Courses/Program: Butler Program Students take two required courses: an intensive advanced Spanish Review Course is provided during the two-week IFSA-Butler orientation program. This course then continues throughout the semester as a regular support class. Students must also take “The Peruvian Social Reality,” a course designed to give students a basic understanding of Peruvian social reality, identifying the major problems and conflicts, and clarifying the relationship of the present situation in Perú to the most important social processes. Students take two or three university courses at PUCP.
PUCP is a comprehensive university offering a wide range of academic fields including fine arts, management and accounting, archaeology and anthropology, political science, natural sciences and engineering, education, social sciences, arts and humanities, and journalism.
An important feature of IFSA-Butler's program in Peru is the special opportunity for you to become involved in Peruvian social, economic, and political issues through community service and research with major Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Lima. These opportunities will be assigned according to your academic interests. Available organizations focus on human rights, women’s movements, ecology, and other issues. You also will have the opportunity to supplement your academics with activities sponsored by some of PUCP's research centers, including the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, Oriental Studies, or the Center for Social, Economic, Political and Anthropological Research.
Housing: Each IFSA-Butler student studying at PUCP lives with a carefully selected host family. Because most of the culture of Latin America revolves around the extended family, living with a host family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself into the culture and language of Peru. The IFSA-Butler program fee includes two meals per day during the week and one meal on Sundays.
