The Major

Students who major in African and African American studies must complete a minimum requirement of eight one-semester courses offered by the department on the Lincoln Center or Rose Hill campuses. The eight departmental courses must include the Research Seminar, and at least one course on Africa, one course on the Caribbean, and one course on African Americans in the United States. Students may select electives from courses in English, literary studies, history, art and music history, and political science that have been cross listed by the department.

The Minor

Students who minor in African and African American studies must complete a minimum of six one-semester courses, one of which mist be the Research Seminar. The five electives must include at least one course on Africa, and one Course on African Americans in the United States. The department also offers an area concentration in African studies for the international/intercultural studies major.
