The IPED Summer Program in
EMERGING MARKETS AND COUNTRY RISK ANALYSIS
May 27 to July 31, 2003
CURRICULUM
Since the ending of the cold war, private equity investments in emerging financial markets have become a very significant but volatile component of the capital flows into the developing world. Emerging fund managers must not only know the standard tools of financial analysis, but they must also be able to integrate these skills into a fairly sophisticated political and economic framework in order to minimize the difficult risks they face in investing in Asian, African, Latin American, and Eastern European markets. The curriculum for the Advanced Certificate in Emerging Markets and Country Risk Analysis is designed to provide present and future fund managers with such an integrated approach, combining financial, political, and economic analysis in order to better assess the financial opportunities in these markets.
Certificate Requirements:
The Certificate in Emerging Markets and Country Risk Analysis is earned by successfully completing POGA 6991 Political Risk Analysis and ECGA 5540 Emerging Markets with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better. Students who lack either two undergraduate courses or one graduate course in finance with grades of B or better, must also complete ECGA 5040 Strategic Financial Management with a grade of B or better.
Program of Studies:
During the first five weeks of the Certificate Program, all students will enroll in POGA 6991 Political Risk Analysis. This course, which meets two nights each week, studies the methods used to assess and manage the political risks associated with foreign investment and international business. Students will learn how to assess a country's risk by examining its domestic political climate, its economic climate, as well as its geopolitical relationships with other nations. Each student will be required to analyze the political risks associated with a country of their choosing.
Students who lack adequate preparation in finance will also be required to enroll in ECGA 5040 Strategic Financial Management at the same time they are taking POGA 6991 Political Risk Analysis. ECGA 5040 Strategic Financial Management also meets two nights each week.
During the last five weeks of the Certificate Program, all students will enroll in ECGA 5540 Emerging Markets. This course, which meets two nights each week, builds on the skills learned in Political Risk Analysis and in Strategic Financial Management. Emerging Markets provides essential training in the economic and financial analysis of emerging financial markets. This course will train students to interpret various macroeconomic indicators, evaluate risks from exchange rate fluctuations, and estimate the potential returns and risks associated with foreign equity investments. Each student will be required to prepare an individual country study evaluating their country's potential prospects for equity investment.
Transfer Credit:
If you are a visiting graduate student, be sure to confirm with your home school, and prior to your attendance at Fordham, how much credit you may transfer into your home program.
Internship Opportunities:
A key strength of the Certificate Program is its location in New York City. Visiting graduate students are strongly urged to take advantage of their time in New York by doing an internship with a major financial firm or bank. Internships should be worked out prior to coming to New York. Be sure to take advantage of your home school's career placement office. You may also wish to consult the latest edition of Peterson's Guide to Internships.
