Master of Arts with a Writing Concentration (M.A.)
Fordham University's MA in English with a Writing Concentration offers intimate workshops in poetry, fiction, memoir, creative non-fiction, and genre writing, while at the same time providing seminars in English and American literature in the full range of periods and genres, as part of a PhD-granting, research-based department. Students may enroll full or part-time, and writing courses are held on both the Rose Hill and Lincoln Center campuses.
Curricular Requirements: Students choosing the Writing Concentration are required to take a total of ten courses. Four of these must be graduate courses in literature that cover four of the historical distribution requirements of our regular Masters curriculum. Five courses must be in creative and/or expository writing. The remaining course is a capstone writing project, developed individually with a faculty mentor. Aside from the writing project, there are no fixed requirements governing the writing portion of the curriculum, but we encourage students to take both 5000-level seminars and 6000-level workshops. We also urge that, whenever possible, students select writing and literature courses that complement one another. Writing seminars will be limited to twelve students and workshops to ten. After completing course work, Writing Concentration students are required to pass a special Masters comprehensive exam (on literature).
Admission: Students applying for the MA in English with a Writing Concentration must submit all of the materials specified in Fordham's standard GSAS online application: undergraduate transcripts, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and a critical writing sample. In addition, students who wish to pursue the writing concentration shall submit a second writing sample, consisting of a 6-10 page example of creative work. Applicants should specify their wish to specialize in writing and describe their particular area of interest. Various merit-based financial aid packages are available up to full tuition remission and a living stipend.
Faculty and Courses: Ten members of Fordham's English faculty teach writing courses, in addition to two Writers-in-Residence. Each Fall and Spring semester the Department offers approximately fifteen graduate courses, two to three of which will be in creative or advanced expository writing. In addition, there will be writing courses available during the summer session.
Our affiliated campus organization, Poets Out Loud (POL), hosts readings by prominent national and international writers. Students will also be invited to participate in a variety of other programs featuring visiting writers.
