Creative Writing - Graduate - M.A. with WC Capstone

M.A. with Writing Concentration Capstone

As of Fall 2013, we are no longer accepting applications to the MA with Writing Concentration degree program.

Students in the M.A. with WC program are required to complete a creative writing Capstone project, a manuscript of work developed individually and completed during the student’s second year under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Because the Capstone requires two full semesters to complete, the timeline for this is either Fall/Spring or Spring/Fall.

Students select their M.A. with WC Capstone Advisor and Second Reader from the full-time Creative Writing Faculty or from the two Writers-in-Residence and confirm their mentorship by the end of the fourth month in their first year in the program (April or November).

Registration

During the semester you plan to complete Capstone:

Download and complete (including all signatures) the M.A. wWC Capstone Registration Form.
Submit the completed form to Graduate Administrator Martine Stern.

PAGE REQUIRMENTS

Fiction and nonfiction manuscripts: at least 40 pages (advisor should determine page limit according to the student’s abilities and needs)
Poetry manuscripts: at least 30 pages (advisor should determine page limit according to the student’s abilities and needs)

Timeline
Note: The following serves as a guideline. Students and Faculty Advisors may choose to devise a plan entailing feedback that is more frequent.

Fall Semester (Focus on Creation)
September
by 9/30	Draft the scope of the Capstone in consultation with the Faculty Advisor.
October
10/31:	Discuss progress on Capstone 1st draft with Faculty Advisor.
December
12/1:	Discuss progress on Capstone 1st draft with Faculty Advisor Register for "Capstone Project." See "Capstone Registration" above.
Spring Semester (Focus on Revision)
January
1/10:	Discuss progress on Capstone 1st draft with Faculty Advisor.
1/20:	Capstone 1st Draft Due. Submit 1st draft of Capstone to Faculty Advisor.
1/31:	Receive comments from Faculty Adivsor on Capstone and begin revision.
February
2/28:	Capstone 2nd Draft Due: Submit 2nd draft of Capstone to Faculty Advisor.
March
3/15:	Receive comments from Faculty Advisor on Capstone and begin revision.
April
4/1:	Capstone 3rd Draft Due: Submit 3rd draft of Capstone to Second Reader.
4/15:	Receive comments from Second Reader on Capstone and begin revision.
May
5/1:	Capstone Final Submission: Student submits a final copy of the Capstone including a final cover page to the Faculty Advisor and Second Reader for their official signatures. Upon obtaining the signatures of the Faculty Advisor and the Second Reader, student submits a perfect bound copy of the Capstone to the Creative Writing Director.
