The graduate and undergraduate creative writing programs exist as an integrated part of a research-based English department with a lively interest in the relationship between creative writing and the study of literary texts from a variety of critical and theoretical vantage points. We feel that the study of literature and the practice of writing are mutually reinforcing; our core faculty members are both scholars and creative writers. We offer small classes in a personal, advisor-driven environment, relying on core faculty plus two rotating positions (poet-in-residence and writer-in-residence).
Our position in New York City gives us an extraordinary advantage, in terms of the power of the writing community, the pool of writers from which we draw instructors, and the many events and programs to which we can direct our students, including Fordham's own reading series, Poets Out Loud. The Fordham creative writing community includes undergraduates, graduates and alumni, who meet to discuss writing, listen to readings, and provide crucial contacts for each other. |

Undergraduates who are interested in Creative Writing have a variety of options available. English Majors may choose between the Creative Writing Minor and the Creative Writing Option. The Creative Writing Minor is also available to non-English majors. For graduate students, a Masters Degree with a Writing Concentration in English is offered. This program, part of the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, provides students with the opportunity to combine the practice of their craft with scholarly literary studies. In addition to coursework, the Graduate Student Writing Group provides an informal workshop atmosphere as well as a network of peers who host semi-annual readings both on and off campus.
