Fordham in London Summer Program

When a man is tired of London he is tired of life, for there is in London all that life can afford --- Samuel Johnson

Now that Fordham has its own London digs—at the University of London’s Heythrop College—join members of our distinguished faculty as you earn credit  for courses in Economics, English, Film, History, Latin American Studies or Creative Writing, all designed to take advantage of the best that London has to offer. Situated in London’s historic South Kensington, classes and student quarters are minutes from Kensington Palace where Princess Diana once lived, as well as from the city's museums, theatres, concert halls, shops and pub. As part of your coursework, we will take guided excursions and field trips in Kensington and beyond—to plays, galleries, films, and historic sites or to ethnic neighborhoods where we can sample cuisine from Asia, Africa and South America.

Eligibility and Credit

Fordham in London offers 7 four-week courses, open to both Fordham and non-Fordham students who have completed at least two college-level semesters, with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Each course is worth four credits.

Program Dates

Session I: June 14-July 16
Session II: July 18-August 15

Courses meet four days a week, either in the morning or afternoon, leaving you plenty of time to explore London and beyond. Watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace; tour the Houses of Parliament and the famous clocktower that houses Big Ben. Other must-see London sights include the London Bridge and nearby Tower of London with its colorful 'Beefeaters,' the British Museum and the Tate Modern.  London's newest landmark, the London Eye, will give you a bird's-eye view of the city.  And when you're looking for a little peace and quiet, Hampstead Heath or Kew Garden provide a lush oasis.  Famous universities Oxford and Cambridge are only an hour away by train.

English & Creative Writing Courses

ENLU 3094: Writing for GRANTA: A Creative Writing Workshop (Session II)
Experience the best of England's contemporary literary culture!  Granta, London's vibrant, influential magazine of new writing, is the focus of this class.  We will read non fiction and fiction by such authors as Ian McEwan, Arundhati Roy, Salman Rushdie, and Jeannette Winterson, and write our own personal essays and other kinds of creative nonfiction.  We'll meet with editors and writers from Granta, attend relevant plays and films, and tour literary hot spots.  By the end of the course, students will have created their own magazines, complete with covers and other individual flourishes such as photo essays, fiction, and poetry.

ENLP 3652: New Wave Immigrant Literature (Session II)
For the last 30 years, both London and New York have been home to émigrés from Jamaica and India, both former British colonies.  This course will focus on work by immigrants from these countries and others to the US and the UK.  Among the writers we will read are Jhumpa Lahiri, Hanif Kureishi, Monica Ali and Zadie Smith and among the films we will see are “Bend it Like Beckham,”  “My Beautiful Launderette,” and “Brick Lane.”  The course will use London as a resource, with an outing to the Museum =2 0of Immigration and Diversity, as well as various ethnic neighborhoods. We will also have as a guest speaker an editor at Granta, a leading literary journal which publishes short stories and essays by both established and emerging writers, many of them from immigrant backgrounds.
