Until the founding of POL, New York City’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts had no established series of poetry readings. Seeking to fill this void, a small group of faculty, staff, students and alumni at Fordham University at Lincoln Center established the Poets Out Loud series in 1992. The mission of Poets Out Loud is to bring a public audience to Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus and to foster the appreciation, creation, and study of poetry both within the University and in the wider NYC community. Since its inception, the series has grown from two readings a year to a full schedule of events throughout the academic year, as well as other programs. Related Fordham programs include the new MA in English with a Writing Concentration (which offers small workshops in poetry, fiction, memoir, and creative non-fiction), the Think Summer/Think Poetry/Think Fordham program, and a 2-3 year position for a Poet-in-Residence.
