Master of Arts ( M.A. )

Fordham University's M.A. in English program features seminars in English and American literature in the full range of periods and genres as part of a Ph.D.-granting, research-based department. Enrollment in the program may be full- or part-time, and M.A. students have five years to complete the degree.

REQUIREMENTS

For the M.A. degree, students must complete ten courses (30 credits), demonstrate reading knowledge of one of the following languages: French, German, Italian, Latin, or Spanish, and complete an M.A. Capstone Project.

Of the ten courses, one, either Research Methods or Introduction to Critical Theory, is mandatory. Students who plan to apply to the Ph.D. may consider taking both of these courses.
  • Either Research Methods or Introduction to Critical Theory (3 credits)

  • Five (5) Literature Courses in each of five historical areas (15 credits)
    • Before 1485 (British 1)
    • British literature, 1485-1800 (British 2)
    • British literature after 1800 (includes Irish & post-colonial) (British 3)
    • American literature before 1910 (American 1)
    • American literature since 1910 (American 2)
  • Four (4) Elective Courses (12 credits)

  • Reading Knowledge of One Foreign Language (0 credits)

  • M.A. Capstone Writing Project (0 credits)
  • M.A. students must maintain satisfactory academic progress with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B), 3.5 (B+) for those receiving financial aid, and maintain continuous enrollment.

    MA Research Project

There is one exception to the ten-course requirement. Those rare students who wish to do an in-depth M.A. research project may do so, with the permission of the Graduate Director, which would take the place of one elective course. Students who plan to do the research project should secure a mentor in the semester before their research and writing. They also need to complete and submit a special registration form with their mentor.

    Comprehensive Exam

Students who matriculated in Spring 2012 or before may, by special request to the DGS, take the M.A. Comprehensive Exam in place of their M.A. Capstone.

The following students are exempt from the M.A. Comprehensive Exam:
Students matriculating in Summer 2012 or later
Students planning to graduate after Summer 2012
