Fordham's English department offers a unique and flexible graduate program in a beautiful small college environment with all the additional advantages New York City has to offer students and scholars. The M.A. and Ph.D. professional degree programs prepare students to become teachers and scholars of English language and literature. |

|
The Ph.D. program is intimate and extremely competitive, offering full funding (tuition and stipend) to every accepted student; a very high percentage of our students receive tenure-track positions on completion of the program. Fordham's English faculty are widely published, prize-winning scholars, who share a commitment to rigorous and imaginative teaching, research, and criticism. The program offers close interaction between professor and student, as well as ancillary seminars, readings and lectures, ranging from an annual panel on academic publishing to a seminar just for students writing dissertations. |

| The graduate program offers every field of literature written in English, along with a variety of critical approaches. Students in the M.A. program study a wide range of literature; students in the Ph.D. program specialize in a given historical period or genre. Introductory courses are complemented by more intensive seminars, and independent study (Graduate Tutorials) may be easily arranged.Students are encouraged to take comparative or interdisciplinary courses; for example, Medieval Studies adds a mix of supplementary courses to the English program offerings. Fordham also participates in the New York City Doctoral Consortium, which allows Ph.D. students to take one or two courses at Columbia University, New York University, the City University of New York, and New School University. |

While the Ph.D. program is fully funded, some fellowships are available at the M.A. level, and full-time M.A. applicants are encouraged to apply. Summer research support is available on a competitive basis, as are dissertation-year fellowships and research assistantships. Courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening for the benefit of those MA students who enroll on a part-time basis.
