Getting Around

Navigating New York

Seeing Manhattan:

As the difficulties of driving--and parking--in New York City are legendary, conference goers may prefer to explore other methods of getting around town.  In addition to the familiar Yellow Taxicab, which can be hailed by raising your arm on virtually any streetcorner, New York boasts one of the finest public transportation systems in the world.  Detailed information on subway and bus routes and service can be found at the MTA homepage, http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us.  Those exploring the Outer Boroughs or the rest of the tri-state area may also wish to investigate other transportation options.

The Metro-North and Long Island Railways:

These trains, operated by the MTA, provide service between New York City and its suburbs.

The Metro-North provides service to Westchester, Duchess, and Rockland counties in New York, and extends into Connecticut as far as New Haven.  All lines originate at Grand Central Station (42nd St. & Park Ave.), and New Haven and Harlem lines stop at Fordham's Rose Hill (main) campus.

The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) is Long Island's transportation backbone, making numerous stops in both Queens and Brooklyn before continuing on to either Greensport on the northern fork of Long Island, or Maontauk on the Southern fork.  The main terminus is Pennsylvania Station (34th St. & 8th Ave.), although it may be neccessary to transfer at Jamaica Station, Queens, for trains terminating there.

Detailed maps and schedules for both railways can be found on the MTA homepage.

New Jersey Transit:

NJT provides rail service, originating from New York's Penn Station (34th St. & 8th Ave.), to stations throughout New Jersey.  Details are available from NJT, http://www.njtransit.com.

Amtrak:

Amtrak's New York station is Pennsylvania Station (34th St. & 8th Ave.).  Service is available to all stations Amtrak or its Canadian partner ViaRail serve, including High Speed Acela service along the Northeast Corridor, from Washington, D.C., to Boston.  Schedules and tickets are available on-line from Amtrak, http://www.amtrak.com.
