Research Opportunities in New York
The New York Metropolitan Area is home to some of the finest Museums, Libraries, and Research Institutions in the world, some of which may be of interest to NASSR and BARS members. Links to some of these institutions' on-line resources and contact information can be found below.
Libraries:
Of partucular interest to NASSR participants are the Alfred A. Berg Collection of English and American Literature--a collection of letters, manuscripts and rare books from one of America's most celebrated collectors--and the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle--a collection of some 25,000 books, manuscripts, letters, and other objects from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
The Morgan Libray maintains a substantial collection of letters and manuscripts, including autograph MSS by Byron and Austen.
The Frick Library has an extremely varied collection, ranging from reference works and catalogs, to illuminated and autograph manuscripts from the fourth to twentieth centuries.
Museums and Collections:
In addition to its extensive art holdings, the Met is home to an extensive system of reference libraries and collections.
The New York Historical Society http://www.nyhistory.org
The New York Historical Society contains a broad range of books
relating to the European discovery and settlement of North America and the Caribbean--as well as to the institution of slavery. It also houses
the Rufus King collection. King was American minister to England from
l796-l803 and an ardent book collector, who amassed a library of over
5,000 volumes while in England. The NYHS catalogue can be reached through the New York University catalogue at http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst. (For those considering an earlier trip to New York City, please note that the library will be closed for renovation from about January 20, 2003 until the middle of April 2003.)
