Tá sé mar aidhm ag an mion-dhíriú sna Léinn Éireannaigh tuiscint a chothú i bhforbairt staire agus cultúrtha pobal na hÉireann, a dteanga, litríocht agus Institiúidí sóisialta. San áireamh sa dhíriú seo tá ról na hÉireann – go hintleachtúil, go spioradálta, go healaíonta – i sibhialtacht an Iarthair agus taithí phobal na hÉireann mar cheann den chéad náisiún iar-choilíneach agus le diaspora eisimirceach.

Mar sin, tá na Léinn Éireannaigh aon d’aon mhic léinn atá suim acu i staidéar a dhéanamh ar chultúr éagsúil agus saibhir, agus go speisialta do mhic léinn le cúlra Éireannach ar mhaith leo tuiscint nua nó athnuachan ar a áit féin – stairiúil agus nua-aimseartha – i sochaí ilfheidhmeannach.

Bheadh na cúrsaí sna Léinn Éireannaigh oiriúnach do mhic léinn le mór-dhíriú sa Bhéarla, Litríocht Comparáideach, Dán agus Eolaíocht Cumarsáide, nó Polaitíocht. Ba cheart mic léinn atá suim acu i mór-dhíriú idirdhisciplíneach sna Léinn Éireannaigh (tríd staidéar speisialta agus idirdhisciplíneach) teagmháil a dhéanamh leis an Stiúrthóir.

D’fhéadfadh mac léinn na riachtanais do mion-dhíriú sna Léinn Éireannaigh a shásamh tríd meán pointe-ghrádaigh de 2.5 i gcúrsaí Léinn Éireannaigh. Caithfidh mic léinn sé chúrsa Léinn Éireannaigh a chríochnú.

Minor in Irish Studies

The minor in Irish Studies is aimed at an understanding of the historical and cultural development of the Irish people, their language, literature, social institutions. This focus includes the significance of their contribution – intellectually, spiritually, artistically – to Western civilization and their experiences as one of the first post-colonial nations and of emigrant Diaspora. As such, Irish Studies is intended for all students interested in the study of a rich and varied culture, and is of special interest to those students of Irish antecedents for whom it will provide a new or renewed awareness of their place – historical and contemporary – in a pluralistic society. For students majoring in English, Comparative Literature, Communication Arts and Sciences, or Political Science, a wide selection of courses in Irish Studies may provide a logical corollary to their principal interest. Students interested in an interdisciplinary major in Irish Studies (through Interdisciplinary and Special Studies) should consult with the the director of Irish Studies. A student may meet the requirements for graduation as an Irish Studies minor by maintaining a grade-point average of 2.5 in Irish Studies courses. Students must complete a total of 6 courses that may be counted towards Irish studies.
