Gregory Filippone (GSAS’11), a LALS M.A.
The Latin American and Latino Studies Institute was very beneficial for me both as an individual and a professional. Entering an interdisciplinary program offeredme an opportunity to learn about the Latin American region from various perspectives. I took courses in economics, history, culture and political science. The result was a well-rounded understanding of the region and its many characteristics. There is a tremendous amount of information that can be learned about LatinAmerica, so I believe that focusing only on oneaspect is insufficient.

I chose to pursue my M.A. in LatinAmerica and Latino Studies because of the amazing breadth of opportunities it presents. Here you will learn a variety of issues concerning Latin America and Latinos. The focus of the Latin American and Latino Studies Institute (LALSI) is to prepare you to lead the institutions that shapeour future world. Therefore, I recommend those who are interested in Latin America to apply to the program. During my time at LALSI I was surrounded by faculty and students who have already done extraordinary things in development and who are deeply motivated to become even more effective professionals in the future.

Melissa Castillo Garsow (GSAS ’11), Certificate of LALS
The advanced certificate in Latin American and Latino Studies was the perfect way for me supplement my Master's from the English Department in areas that interested me but were not offered within my department. I also found the interdisciplinary approach and range of subjects invaluable for preparing me to pursue a Phd in American Studies.at Yale. Finally, the small size of the program allowed me to develop close relationships with a number of professors, and moreoeve receiveindividualized attention from the director, who helped taylor the program to my needs and interests.
