M.A. in Latin American and Latino Studies
Why an MA in Latin American and Latino Studies?
With the MA in Latin American and Latino Studies, students may pursue advanced graduate work in a specific discipline (such as History, Spanish, Anthropology, etc), find employment with non-governmental organizations here or abroad, or use the degree to enhance their knowledge of Latin American and US Latinos for a career in business, marketing, or consulting.
Why Fordham University?
Fordham University offers the only graduate degree in Latin American and Latino Studies in New York City, and one of the very few in the nation. Combining Latin American and Latino Studies makes sense in the 21st century because it is impossible to discuss Latinos in the US and Latin America as discrete and separate cultures. The Master’s program at Fordham University is also unique in that it requires hands-on experience to complete the degree. Students must complete an internship or service learning or research either here or abroad to earn the Master’s degree
The Latin American and Latino Studies Institute (LALSI) at Fordham University is strongly committed to interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the complexities of the countries of Latin America and of Latinos in the US. LALSI’s faculty come from many departments, including History, Spanish, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, Theology, African & African American Studies, Art History, and Communications. The excellent faculty is dedicated to providing scholarly direction to students. The Walsh Family Library at Fordham University has an excellent collection of Latin American and Latino books and journals. Additionally, New York City is home to one of the finest research libraries in the world, the New York Public Library.
Fordham University’s location in the metropolitan New York area, with campuses in the Bronx and Manhattan provides students with rich cultural, educational, and ethnic resources for Latin American and Latino Studies. Additionally, students may take advantage of the Jesuit network of colleges and universities across Latin America.
