The Double Major
The Latin American and Latino Studies (LALS) major is a perfect complement for other majors, particularly when these others include courses with Latin American content.
In fact because some LALS courses also count towards the CORE distributive requirements, there is a great deal of flexibility in combining LALS with another major. The LALS major can "double count" up to four (4) courses from another one. The following section describes how to plan for double majors with History, Political Science, Sociology, or Spanish.
History/LALS Double Major
Core: Two of the 21 course courses (HS 1000 and one from HS 1100-1700) count for the History major and 2 more (the distributive requirements in American Pluralism and Global Studies) are easily fulfilled with courses that count towards the LALS major.
Majors: The LALS major can double-count 2 history courses: HS 1400 and another in Latin American or Latino history. With this double major students are left with 5 free electives.

Political Science/LALS Double Major
Core: Two of the 21 core courses (the Social Science requirements) are satisfied by Political Science major courses, and 3 more (the distributive requirements in American Pluralism and Global Studies and one of the history requirements) are easily fulfilled with courses that count towards the LALS major.
Majors: The LALS major can double-count 2 Political Science courses if they have Latin American or Latino content. With this double major students are left with 7 free electives.

Sociology/LALS Double Major
Core: Two of the 21 core courses (the Social Science requirements) are satisfied by Sociology major courses, and 3 more (the distributive requirement in American Pluralism and Global Studies and one of the history requirements) are easily fulfilled with courses that count towards the LALS major.

Spanish/LALS Double Major
Core: Two of the 21 course courses may be satisfied by Spanish major courses if they count towards the core language requirement, and 3 more (the distributive requirements in American Pluralism and Global Studies and one of the history requirements) are easily fulfilled with courses that count towards the LALS major.
Majors: The LALS major can double-count 2 Spanish courses if they have Latin American or Latino content. With this double-major students are left with 5 free electives.
