The Mathematics Department of Fordham University is seeking applications from Ph.D.’s who have an active and productive research program and a record of success in undergraduate teaching for a Tenure Track Assistant Professorship to begin in the Fall of 2010.

Research Candidates in all areas of pure and applied mathematics are encouraged to apply. We are especially interested in those whose specialties give promise of leading to research collaborations with our permanent faculty, or who work in computational or applied areas and have a record of collaboration with researchers in non-mathematical disciplines. Our faculty’s specialties (followed in parentheses by areas of particular interest) include: number theory (algebraic and elliptic curves, diophantine equations), algebraic topology (homotopy theory, homological algebra), complex analysis (Siegel modular forms, quasi-conformal mappings, dynamical systems), algebra (symbolic computation, abelian groups), stochastic analysis (numerical methods), information-based complexity (numerical methods for elliptic PDEs and Fredholm problems), cryptography, mathematical and computational biology, and algebraic geometry (moduli of curves).
Teaching Fordham’s educational mission is centered on a tradition of cura personalis, respect and care for the entire person. To tailor instruction to this tradition, classes are small (at most 25 students in courses in the Mathematics major and 30 in service courses). The normal load is 7.5 contact hours per semester (“3-2”) with at most 2 preparations. We thus expect that the number of hours which the candidate will devote to teaching will be comparable to that in “2-2” departments. The Department offers B.Sc. and B.A. degrees in Mathematics, a joint major in Mathematics and Economics, a combined 5-year Mathematics Education program leading to the B.A. and M.Ed. degrees, and particpates in a 5-year Cooperative Program in Engineering (in collaboration with Columbia and Case Western Reserve).
Campuses Fordham’s 85 acre main Rose Hill campus is located 20 minutes by train from Grand Central in the north Bronx. Adjacent to the 285 acre New York Botanical Garden, the 265 acre Bronx Zoo and Belmont shopping district which is the Bronx’s “Little Italy”, Rose Hill is classic “gown” campus, its stately Gothic stone architecture surrounded by acres of well kept lawns and gardens and meandering trellised walks. Fordham has a second “town” campus, Lincoln Center, located in midtown Manhattan adjacent to the world renown Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and a block from Columbus Circle and Central Park: last year, the University announced a multi-year plan to build an addition 1.5 million square feet of space at Lincoln Center at a cost of over a billion dollars. Candidates normally teach at Rose Hill but may occasionally spend a semester based at Lincoln Center if desired. The University operates a fleet of express vans that connect the two campuses in 30 minutes and operate year-round 18-22 hours a day.
Mathematics in the New York area New York city is one of the most important mathematical centers in the United States. Columbia University, New York University and the City University of New York are all located within 30 minutes of Fordham. Rutgers and Stony Brook can be reached in just under an hour by car or train and Princeton and Yale in just over an hour. The Department is generally able to arrange teaching schedules to allow faculty to attend seminars and courses in their specialty at these area institutions and many members of the department actively collaborate with their faculty.
Life in the New York area Duh!
