Guillaume d'Orange Cycle

Guillaume d'Orange Cycle

Summary

Known as either the Old French cycle of Guillaume d'Orange or the Garin de Monglane Cycle - after Guillaume's legendary ancestor -, this medieval cycle of twenty-four chansons recounts the life and deeds of William of Orange, his father Aymeri, and the other members of his family. Several recensions of this text may have circulated in medieval Italy. Two manuscripts from this tradition survive: Oxford Canonici 54 and Venice Marciano VIII (= 252). The Venetian manuscript contains a early copy of Aliscans,a central episode in the Guillaume d'Orange cycle that describes the death of Vivien, Guillaume's nephew at the battle of Aliscans, and the consequences of his death for Guillaume. The Oxford manuscript holds a unique version of the Couronnement de Louis, which contains a extended description of Charlemagne's death, known as the Mort Charlemagne.
