Normative Documents from the
Military Orders

The French language was used in different ways by the three main Military Orders, the Hospitallers, the Templars, and the Teutonic Knights. Both the Templars and Hospitallers created French-language normative documents, which provided guidance for order members concerning the mission and practices of their organization, rules concerning member behavior, and the changes made to these regulations over time.
