Drawing from a long Jesuit tradition of scholarship on and respect for the world's diverse languages and cultures and from New York City's vibrant multilingual and multicultural communities and institutions, the department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a wide range of courses in ARABIC, FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, JAPANESE, MANDARIN CHINESE, RUSSIAN and SPANISH that aim to develop students' linguistic proficiency and cultural competence. It also offers upper-level courses leading to majors and minors in French, German, Italian and Spanish, and minors in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Russian.
Its faculty of 21 tenured and tenure-track members specialize in and teach upper-level courses in French, German, Italian, and Spanish medieval, early modern, modern and postmodern literatures and cultures; Latin American and Francophone colonial and postcolonial literatures and cultures; and contemporary Latino writing and film. Through its majors and minors in language studies, the department promotes the interdisciplinary study of language by encouraging students to take courses in related fields. It also provides students with the opportunity to connect with New York City's multilingual communities through service learning courses.
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures prepares students for graduate and professional work and for study abroad. Its study abroad programs, such as Fordham's Spring Semester in Granada and Summer Study in Paris and Rome, extensive tutoring services, and lectures, film series, and cultural events, such as the department's distinguished annual Cervantes Lecture, seek to immerse students in the languages and cultures they study, foster their participation in international networks and events, and engage them in a dialogue across languages and cultures.
