Majors in German language and literature will take a minimum of ten courses numbered 1501 (Intermediate German I) and higher. These ten courses normally include German Language and Literature (GERM 2001) and Approaches to Literature (GERM 2500), and six courses (or more, depending on initial placement) chosen in consultation wth the German adviser. Students who place out of any of the following, GERM 1501, 1502 and/or 2001, will replace them with upper-level courses.

The German Studies major is an individualized interdisciplinary major consisting of ten courses numbered 1501 (Intermediate German I) and higher. A l l German Studies major courses are to be selected in consultation with the German adviser, and will normally include German Language and Literature (GERM 2001) and Approaches to Literature (GERM 2500). Students who place out of any of the following, GERM 1501, 1502 and/or 2001, will replace them with upper-level courses. Up to three related courses may be taken outside the department, but must be approved in advance by the German adviser.
