Fordham University/WildLife Conservation Society's NSF Noyce Scholarship Program

Fordham University and the Wildlife Conservation Society at the Bronx Zoo announce a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program that provides scholarships to students  majoring, or with a degree, in science who are committed to teaching science in high need school districts upon the completion of a teacher credential program.

What are the benefits of becoming a Noyce Teacher Scholar in the Fordham University/WCS Bronx Zoo Program?
Scholarship recipients:
  • Receive a $40,000 tuition scholarship.*
  • Obtain New York State certification to teach science.
  • Participate in a paid 4-week summer internship at the Bronx Zoo ($2,500).
  • Receive mentoring by faculty and educators at Fordham University and the WCS/Bronx Zoo.
  • Are paired with a selected practicing teacher in the field for mentoring and guidance.
*NOTE: Undergraduate science majors at Fordham University are eligible for up to 3 years of funding (direct tuition and paid internships totaling more than $54,000). Those holding degrees in science and/or science professionals eligible to enter the Graduate School of Education's adolescent science education program are eligible for one year of funding as they earn their license to teach science.

Who Should Apply?
Candidates who meet all of the following criteria are eligible to apply:
  • Are United States citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens.
  • Are committed to teaching science in a high-need middle or high school for two years for every year of funding.
  • Are either:
  • Currently juniors in a science program at Fordham University and meet the eligibility requirements for the 5-year track for teacher education in the Fordham University Graduate School of Education or
  • Are graduates from a degree-granting program in science or are science professionals eligible to enter the Graduate School of Education's adolescent science education program.

What is a High Needs School?
Noyce Scholars must commit to teach for two years at any school in a high need district anywhere in the United States for each year of scholarship funding received. "High need" is defined as a school district with at least one school with:
  • a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line;
  • a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach; or
  • a high teacher turnover rate.

When is the Deadline?
  • Undergraduate Application Deadline: December 15th 5:00 PM (EST)
  • Graduate Application Deadline: April 15th 5:00 PM (EST)
What are the Obligations of the Noyce Teacher Scholarship Recipients?
Noyce Teacher Scholars must:
  • begin and complete the teacher credential program upon receipt of the scholarship.
  • complete a two-year teaching commitment in a high-needs school district of obtaining the teaching credential for each year of scholarship funding.
  • participate in Noyce Scholar planned workshops and site visits to schools.
  • participate inthe activities outlined in the grant's evaluation plan.
  • Receipt of the scholarship award will be contingent upon signing a scholarship contract.
