In Fordham's liberal arts tradition, philosophy has a special role in the development of the mature individual. Philosophy provides students the opportunity to reflect on the most fundam ental questions that concern human beings and the ultimate dimensions of their world. The courses in philosophy acquaint students with the intellectual and moral traditions of their civilization and aim to develop in the student the skills necessary to think clearly and carefully for themselves--to question their assumptions and to judge their principles critically with the depth required for them to act as mature, integrated, free persons in their society and to provide it with enlightened, responsible leadership and service.

The department is happy to announce that Professor Stephen Grimm has recently received a 3.56 million dollar grant from the Templeton Foundation, for a project entitled "Varieties of Understanding: New Perspectives from Psychology, Philosophy, and Theology.
The grant will sponsor research in psychology, philosophy, and theology that will examine the various ways in which human beings understand the world, how these various types of understanding might be improved, and how they might be combined with one another to produce an integrated understanding of the world.
While Fordham will spearhead the grant, different elements of the project will also take place at UC Berkeley, NYU, and Princeton Theological Seminary. In addition, Fordham's Jennifer Gosetti-Ferencei (Philosophy) and Terrence Tilley (Theology) will play important research roles.

The Fordham Philosophy Department is seeking to fill the following position:
Asst. Prof., tenure-track, commencing fall 2013. 3/2 teaching load (undergraduate and graduate). Ph.D. required. AOS: Continental philosophy. AOC: open. A background in the history of philosophy and teaching ability in the core areas of Philosophy of Human Nature or Philosophical Ethics is required. Applications must be submitted online through Interfolio.com (https://secure.interfolio.com/apply/16250). Applications must include aletter of application and curriculum vitae, a transcript, writing sample, evidence of teaching ability (e.g., syllabi, student evaluations, letters discussing teaching ability) and at least three letters of recommendation. The deadline for the receipt of all materials is November 5. We are sad to announce the death of Elizabeth Kraus, a member of the faculty in the Philosophy Department for over two decades before her retirement as full professor in 1990.
We are sad to announce the death of James A. Sadowsky, S.J., a longtime member of the Fordham Philosophy Department and Professor Emeritus since his retirement.
Congratulations to Stephen Grimm and Ann Murphy, both of whom have become tenured members of the department and promoted to Associate Professor.
The department is pleased to announce that Reed Winegar (Ph.D. University of Pennsylvania) is joining the department in fall 2012 as an Assistant Professor. He specializes in Kant and will be teaching at the Rose Hill Campus.
The department is also pleased to announce that Crina Gschwandtner will be an Associate Visiting Professor in the department duringthe 2012-13 academic year at the Rose Hill Campus. She will be teaching a graduate seminar on Levinas and Marion.
The department is also happy to announce that Gerald Thomas Krettek, S.J. will hold the St. Ignatius Loyola Chair and be an Associate Visiting Professor in 2012-13. He will also be Director of the M.A.P.R. program.
The department is also pleased to welcome Christopher Rice (Ph.D. Fordham) as a Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellow for the 2012-13 academic year.

- Pavlos Kontos (University of Patras, Greece) on April 2nd at the Rose Hill Campus
- Christine Korsgaard (Harvard University) for the Suarez Lecture on April 9th at the Rose Hill Campus
- Hans Halvorson (Princeton University) for the Walton Lecture in Science, Philosophy and Religion on April 16th at the Lincoln Center Campus
