Graduate Courses

Developmental Psychopathology-PSGA-6530 (3). Syllabus via Blackboard, eRes, or email
This course provides an overview of the field of developmental psychopathology. This integrative field of study is concerned with identifying the dynamic processes that underlie pathways of normal development and the development of psychopathology.  It strives to engage multiple (rather than simply different) levels of analysis in understanding the contribution of, and complex transactions among, genetic, biological, psychosocial, and contextual influences on developmental adaptation and maladaptation.  Through readings, class lectures and discussions, students will become familiar with both foundational and current theoretical and methodological positions and research in developmental psychopathology emphasizing the multiple sources of influence above.  Atypical development focused on the domains of aggressive behavior, oppositional defiant disorder, and conduct disorder will be highlighted with the goal of understanding etiology, classification, risk and resilience factors in developmental pathways, and issues of comorbidity during childhood and adolescence.  We will also consider how developmental psychopathology research can inform and learn from intervention and prevention efforts, finally deriving implications for the relationship of research in this growing field to social policy.
