History of Psychology in New York:
Exceptional Place, Exceptional People

Conference Hosted by
Fordham University’s Department of Psychology
Lincoln Center Campus
Saturday, September 27, 2008

Dear Colleagues,

Fordham University is hosting a conference with the goal of advancing research on the history of psychology and its interrelationships with related fields of psychiatry, social service, and public health in New York City and New York State.

This conference will inaugurate the year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Psychology Department of Fordham University.  It is only fitting that we celebrate by inviting all of New York City and New York State to join us as our department grew to maturity and continues to grow and thrive, embedded in the rich and rewarding relationships among the universities and colleges, and professional organizations and societies of New York.

We invite you, your colleagues, and students to submit papers and posters or to attend and enjoy a day of intellectual stimulation and sleuthing—uncovering and rediscovering New York’s rich psychological history.  We hope you will decide to contribute your expertise and experiences.

Papers on the history of psychology in NYC and NY State are invited. Examples may include but are not limited to biographies and oral histories of psychologists, histories of psychology departments, institutions, and societies, and explorations of the relationships among historical era, place, people, and psychology.

Posters on the history of psychology in NY are invited, especially student projects.  Examples may include mentor genealogies and oral histories.

Confirmed speakers include John Hogan, St John’s University; Wade Pickren: Ryerson University, Toronto; Robert W. Rieber, John Jay College and Fordham; Mark Mattson, Fordham University.  There will a panel honoring Fordham Psychology Professor and Chair Anne Anastasi.

There will be a photo gallery at the conference which will only be a great success if we have submissions from a wide range of psychologists.  All photos will be safeguarded and returned to their owners immediately after the conference.  Dig up your pictures and enjoy the conversations they will spark.

Abstracts of papers and posters and proposals for panels may be submitted beginning February 1, 2008.  Send submissions and address questions to:

Dr. Mark E. Mattson, Program Chair                  mattson@fordham.edu

Save the date and join us for a day of exciting explorations of psychology’s past in New York.

Sincerely,
