Clinical Interests

As a clinical neuropsychologist, I am interested in a variety of neurologic disorders, particularly neurodegenerative disorders such as HIV/AIDS.  I am also quite interested in cross-cultural neuropsychology and the effects of sociocultural factors on cognitive test performance.  I have served as co-chair of the American Psychological Association Division 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology) Ethnic Minority Affairs Steering Committee (2003-2006), and was appointed to serve as Division 40 Membership Chair from 2006-2009.

Research Interests

I have pursued a variety of research areas, including the neuropsychological aspects of chronic mental illness and neurologic disorders. More specifically, my research thus far has focused on two major areas:  the relationship of neuropsychological performance to real-world functioning in persons with schizophrenia and HIV-1 infection among predominantly English-speakers, and development/validation of Spanish language neurobehavioral measures. Emerging from these experiences, I developed research focused on the neuropsychological and functional aspects of psychiatric and neurologic disease, and have disseminated this research via numerous presentations and manuscripts.  At the same time, I have consistently worked closely with graduate and undergraduate students in order for them to gain neuropsychological research experience during both the early stages (i.e., study conceptualization, data collection, etc.) and end stages of research projects (i.e., conference presentations and manuscript preparation).

Currently, I am interested in examining the neuropsychiatric and sociocultural aspects of antiretroviral adherence, a key aspect of everyday function among HIV+ adults.  I am also interested in investigating the sociocultural aspects of cognitive test performance among HIV+ Hispanics.
