This course examines a child's emerging social and emotional capacities as they develop within the child and in interaction with parents, other individuals, and proximal and distal environments over time. Topics include social-emotional competence and communication; executive functioning; parenting and other primary care and educational environments; aggression, prosocial behavior, and moral development; peers and gender segregation; and broader issues of culture, socioeconomic conditions, and public debates about contexts for child development. Observational research methods will be emphasized.

This course will cover the historical and theoretical foundations of developmental psychology and the emergence of the discipline of Applied Developmental Psychology. Core topics will be considered on multiple levels ranging from the child through the family, social settings, and broad environmental and societal factors, with emphasis on core readings, developmentalists, and turning points in the field. Examples of major areas of applied developmental science research from recent decades will be explored

Examines physical, cognitive, and social/emotional development from conception through infancy, toddlerhood, early and middle childhood. Emphasizes the scientific and theoretical bases of developmental psychology, but also discusses the relevance of the topics covered to real life issues such as parenting and social policy. Addresses the impact of various environmental characteristics and contexts on infant and child development. The goal of the course for students is to gain more than a list of facts of the what and when of developmental psychology, but also understanding of the how and why of the processes underlying development and an appreciation for the role that the study of child development plays in our everyday lives.
