APPLIED DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The curricular content of the ADP program focuses on: Human development (bio-psycho-social) in contexts and over time; Prevention/Intervention and Health Promotion; Theories and Methods of Developmental Assessment; Program Evaluation; and Social Policy. Coursework emphasizes the importance of applying research; three courses require field placements (Intervention/prevention, Program evaluation, and the Practicum). As a result, these ADP Program field experiences serve to foster relationships with the communities of the Bronx, the NYC metropolitan area, and beyond. Because human development occurs in contexts, all courses and field experiences include a deep understanding and discussions of interindividual differences in intraindividual change, multiculturalism, vulnerable populations, as well as ethical and moral issues in all three areas of research, applications, and policy.

The program no longer has New York State license-eligible status. This license eligible status and the associated required internship was dropped so that the program could more clearly emphasize research, applications, and policy. The ADP program of course continues to meet New York State accreditation requirements as well as meet GSAS’s and the Psychology Department’s requirements for the MA degree, MA research project, Dissertation, Child abuse identification certification, and the Departmental Research Colloquium.

The ADP Program curriculum is divided into 5 components:
  • Applied Developmental Core – 9 required courses
  • Departmental Requirements (includes MA requirements and doctoral dissertation) - 12 courses
  • Advanced statistics requirement - 3 courses
  • Electives – remaining courses to reach credit requirement
This curriculum requires 81 total credits (51 if student arrives with an MA with an approved empirical Masters thesis), the necessary number to fulfill Fordham University graduation requirements.
