Ayala joined Fordham in 2003 as Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Lincoln Center. She did her dissertation research in Brooklyn with Hasidic women and children on issues of bilingualism (Yiddish-English) and language shift, gender and morality. Her research was funded by the National Science Foundation, Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, Spencer Foundation, and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, among others. Recent publications on this material include Learning Faith: Language Socialization in a Hasidic Community (2006), Language in Society 35(2):207-229 and Literacy, Bilingualism and Gender in a Hasidic community (2001), Linguistics and Education 12(3):261-283. Ayala will be on leave next year in order to complete a book on this research. In addition to her work with Hasidic Jews, Ayala is presenting and publishing ethnographic work she conducted as a postdoctoral research fellow for Synagogue 2000/Hebrew Union College (2000-2001, 2005). This project examines social class and spirituality among Upper West Side Jews, as well as the relationship between language and music in Jewish ritual and everyday life. Ayala is the liaison and advisor to the Society for Sociology and Anthropology.
