 Sociology and Anthropology

M.A. Requirements

The Master=s Degree in sociology offers two program tracks: (1) a general program in sociology, or (2) a concentration in Justice and Criminology. Both tracks require 30 credits of course work beyond the bachelor=s degree, or 24 credits of course work and six credits of thesis research. The degree also requires successful completion of a comprehensive exam to be taken during the final semester of course work or shortly after all course requirements have been finished.  Specific required courses include a semester each of theory, methods, and statistics, plus one computer language (see below). Students planning to do doctoral work in the department are expected to write a thesis.  A B average (3.0) must be maintained in courses taken for the Master=s degree.

Language Requirement

M.A. students must fulfill one language requirement, which entails knowledge of one computer language, such as SPSS or SAS. This is met by successfully completing Statistics I.
