Sociology and Anthropology

Ph.D. Requirements
The Ph.D. in sociology requires at least 30 credits beyond the Master=s level, including a second level course in each of theory, methods, and statistics. Upon completion of course work, the candidate is eligible for the comprehensive examination, provided he or she has maintained an average of 3.5 (B+) in course work and has completed the language requirements (see below). The required courses in theory, methods, and statistics must be completed at Fordham, and eligible Ph.D. students may be permitted to take courses through the Inter-University Doctoral Consortium. The department offers three areas of specialization: (1) race and ethnicity, (2) sociology of religion and culture, and (3) social demography.
Language Requirements
Two languages are required. One is a computer language, such as SPSS or SAS, and is fulfilled by successful completion of the Statistics I and II course sequence. The second is a foreign language, such as Spanish, French, or German. This requirement may be met by taking a competency exam or successfully passing an approved language course. Students should consult the department's Associate Chair for Graduate Studies to discuss ways in which this second language requirement can be met.
