Sociology Major/Minor Requirements

Fordham College at Rose Hill

Major Requirements
Students majoring in sociology at Rose Hill must complete ten courses in the department. The following four courses are required of all majors:

Introduction to Sociology (SOCI 1100)
Sociological Theory (SOCI 2800)
Research Methods I (SOCI 2850) given in the fall semester
Research Methods II (SOCI 2851) given in the spring semester

Sociology majors are free to choose the remaining six elective courses according to their interests and career goals from a broad spectrum of sociological courses offered by the department. Two courses in anthropology may be included among the elective courses. With the written approval of the Chair or Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies, two courses in other social science departments in Fordham College may be counted toward these six elective courses, giving the major considerable opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human social behavior. Students are encouraged to consider taking courses by department faculty teaching at Lincoln Center.

Minor Requirements
Those wishing to take a minor in sociology take a total of six courses in sociology. The following three courses are required for a minor:

Introduction to Sociology (SOCI 1100)
Sociological Theory (SOCI 2800)
Research Methods I (SOCI 2850)

These three required courses are designed to help the student achieve a basic sociological literacy and a reasonable grasp of empirical research techniques. The remaining three courses are electives, one of which can be an anthropology course.

Fordham college at Lincoln Center

Major Requirements
Students majoring in sociology at Lincoln Center must complete nine courses. Three courses are required, and six are electives. The required courses are:

Introduction to Sociology (SOCI 1100)
Sociological Theory (SOCI 2800) or Inequality in America (SOCI 3017)
Social Research Methods (SSCI 2650) in fall semester or Social Science Statistics (SSCI 2606) in spring semester

Sociology majors may choose the remaining six elective courses according to their interests and career goals from a broad spectrum of sociological courses offered by the department, and they are encouraged to consider courses offered by faculty at Rose Hill. Two courses in anthropology may be included among the elective courses. With the written approval of the associate chairperson, two courses in other social science departments in Fordham College may be counted toward these six elective courses, giving the major considerable opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human social behavior.

Minor Requirements
Sociology minors at Lincoln Center must take six courses, of which three are required:

Introduction to Sociology (SOCI 1100)
Sociological Theory (SOCI 2800) or Inequality in America (SOCI 3017)
Social Research Methods (SSCI 2650) in fall semester or Social Science Statistics (SSCI 2606) in spring semester

Sociology minors may complete the remaining three electives with any sociology courses of interest, one of which may be in anthropology.

Early Admission M.A. Program in Sociology
The department offers an early admission program for advanced sociology majors to earn and B.A. and M.A. in five years. Interested students must apply through the Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and maintain a grade point average of at least 3.2.
