The Fordham/ Primary Stages MFA in Playwriting was launched in September 2012. Faculty included Tanya Barfield, Tessa LaNeve, Cusi Cram, Matthew Maguire, Daniel Alexander Jones, Tina Benko, and Sarah Gambito.
Significant leadership in recruiting, public relations, curricular planning, budgetary oversight, and all other areas was provided by Primary Stages’ Managing Director Elliot Fox. The partnership of our two institutions has had an excellent first year.
MFA playwright Jenny Weiner’s The Cave Play was chosen as a semi-finalist for the 2013 O’Neill Playwrights Conference. The one-act play that Jenny wrote in fall ’12, Horse Girls, was chosen for production by the Ars Nova ANT FEST in June ‘13, and then in Chicago with the company Collaboraction in August. Our Fordham cast and design team continued with the Ars Nova production.
MFA playwright Eljon Wardally, adapted to film the play with which she applied to Fordham/Primary Stages. She has since had considerable success with her film, Docket 32357, which has earned placement in 18 film festivals from San Francisco to Los Angeles, to Nashville, to the Bahamas.
In the spring of 2013, theatre students had a master class with renowned War Horse puppeteer Tom Lee in “Puppet Manipulation and The Performer.” Tom used principles of traditional Japanese puppet theater as a starting point. The workshop introduced actors and designers to the art and technique of bringing a figure to life through focus, breath and fixed points of intention. The workshop was a huge success and the students loved what they learned from Tom.

Christine Jones is the Denzel Washington Chair for 2013. She is teaching a Master Class in Design fall '13.
Sean Patrick Monahan’s solo show Diva received a rave review.
