Welcome to the Department of Theology at Fordham University
The Department of Theology promotes a tradition of scholarly excellence and offers robust breadth and depth for undergraduate and graduate studies. Our distinguished faculty members undergird this tradition of excellence through their scholarly research and teaching.
The Department of Theology offers four tracks for the undergraduate major, a two-year M.A. program, and a Ph.D. program with four focal areas for doctoral research:
Within the Fordham University community, the faculty and students of the Department of Theology benefit from collaboration with the Center for Ethics Education; Medieval Studies; Orthodox Christian Studies; the McGinley Chair in Religion and Society; and affiliated faculty from the Classics and Philosophy departments.
In the larger metropolitan area, the Department of Theology is part of the New York City Doctoral Consortium, which enables students to draw on the courses, library resources and faculties of Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, New York University, Jewish Theological Seminary, General Theological Seminary, and St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary.
The undergraduate theology program works closely with the Dorothy Day Center for Service and Justice and the Honors Program at the Rose Hill and Lincoln Center campuses. Fordham also offers a chapter of Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honors society in Theology and Religious Studies.

On Friday, February 1, the Arts and Sciences Deans presented the annual award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching to Associate Professor Benjamin Dunning, commenting especially on his groundbreaking work on the assessment of doctoral dissertations in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The Department of Theology warmly congratulates Prof. Dunning on his achievement. He joins Professors Johnson, Nasuti, and Papanikolaou as Theology Department recipients of the deans' annual teaching awards.
