Research interests: Historical Theology: Lutheran and Reformed Theology, Modern Protestant Theology (19th-20th cent.)
My primary interest is the history of 19th- and 20th-century continental Protestant theology. Karl Barth, Rudolf Bultmann, Friedrich Schleiermacher, Wilhelm Herrmann and Albrecht Ritschl are among the theologians I particularly enjoy reading.
In my book, Dialectical Theologians (2005), I suggest that Wilhelm Herrmann (Bultmann and Barth's teacher) was a decisive figure in the formation of the so-called “dialectical school” of theology in the 1920s and beyond. I also show how the use of dialectical tensions impacted the debate between Barth and Bultmann, and how their differing programs were at the service of theological intentions which were in fact much more similar than they realized. One of their basic intentions was to preserve the mystery of God’s revelation, or God’s concealment in his self-disclosure.
Current projects:
In collaboration with Peter Fischer-Appelt (Hamburg) and Joachim Weinhardt (Karlsruhe): a critical edition of Albrecht Ritschl and Wilhelm Herrmann's letters, in their original language, to be published in 2009 by Mohr Siebeck.
A study of Ernst Troeltsch's theological program in relation to modern Protestant theology, particularly Schleiermacher and the Ritschlian school.
