Research Interests
My original area of interest was modern European history, especially the evolution of the modern papacy, the Catholic Church in nineteenth-century France and Belgium, post-Reformation English Catholicism, and the influence of Irish Catholicism on the Catholic Church in the English-speaking world.

In more recent years I have concentrated my attention on nineteenth and twentieth-century American Catholicism, giving particular attention to the development of the Catholic Church in New York.  I have written three books on New York Catholicism as well as numerous periodical articles.  I have just completed Empire State Catholics, a textbook intended for high school students.  I have been commissioned by Cardinal Egan to write the bicentennial history of the Archdiocese of New York for the anniversary in 2008.
