The Department of Theology will sponsor a lecture by Prof. David Gushee of Mercer University (Professor of Christian Ethics and Director of the Center on Theology and Public Life) related to his just-published book, The Sacredness of Human Life, with book signing afterwards. Prof. Gushee is a major voice in contemporary conversations about religion, politics and ethics on topics from the environment to nuclear proliferation, and abortion to torture.

Sacred Space: A Conversation with the Rev. Dr. Clair McPherson, Professor of Ascetical Theology, General Theological Seminary and Adjunct Professor of Theology, Fordham University
Sacred places are an integral part of the Christian religious tradition and a strong source of nourishment for our spiritual life. What is sacrality and how is a place invested with it? Why is any space sacred, if God is everywhere? What is the history of sacred space? How does the appearance of a sacred place affect our response to it? These and many others questions (including yours!) will be the topic of a conversation to which you are heartily invited.

Orthodoxy in America Lecture by David Tracy: "A Reflection on Contemplation, Speculation and Action in Orthodox Theology." 6:00pm, 12th Floor Lounge, Lincoln Center.
David Tracy, STL, STD, is the Andrew Thomas Greeley and Grace McNichols Greeley Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Catholic Studies and Professor of Theology and the Philosophy of Religion in the University of Chicago Divinity School, and also a member of the Committee on Social Thought. Dr. Tracy has taught a wide variety of courses in contemporary theology: in philosophical, systematic, and constructive theology and hermeneutics, and on issues and persons in religion and modern thought. His publications include Blessed Rage for Order, The Analogical Imagination, Plurality and Ambiguity, and On Naming the Present: Reflections on God, Hermeneutics, and Church. Dr. Tracy is currently writing a book on God based on his Gifford lectures.
