Undergraduate students: The History Makers Scholars Program is recruiting College Mentors. History Makers is a five-week, intensive academic program helping NYC youth make obtaining a college degree a reality. They build and employ social justice curricula rooted in untold and underrepresented histories. College Mentors facilitate critical reading, writing, research, and presentation skills by exposing students to history beyond the textbook in small group discussions, research projects, and field work excursions. Compensation includes free on-campus housing, a $2,000 stipend, and an unlimited Metrocard for July. Master's in Ethics and Society Open House for Fordham University Juniors and Seniors
The Ethics and Society program will host an open house for Fordham University undergraduate students interesting in learning more about the Master's in Ethics and Society. Juniors with a GPA of 3.2 or better are invited to apply to the program under Fordham's Early Admission Program, wherein students complete two graduate-level courses during their senior year and and complete the MA degree in their fifth year. Fordham University seniors are also invited to attend to learn more about program curriculum, opportunities and application procedures. Click here for more information about the open house.
During Summer Session II, Dr. Carolina Aznar of St. Louis University (Madrid campus) will direct an archaeological field school in Israel. Participants will excavate at the site of Tel Regev (near Haifa, Israel), learn about the history and archaeology of the region and the formation of the biblical texts, and travel during the weekends to many of the sites in the region (including Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Dead Sea, Qumran, Herodion, Sea of Galilee, Capharnaum, Nazareth, Tel Dan, and St. John of Acre). Participants will be able to take 2 or 3 undergraduate or graduate credits in Theological Studies, Sociology, or Art History. The deadline to apply to join the project is February 28, 2013. The Fordham Political Review is seeking politically engaged students to write short academic articles. Current editors are focusing on Domestic Politics, International Politics, Business and Economics, and the Middle East, but submissions don't necessarily need to conform to any section. Opinion is welcome, but proper evidence, argument, and citation are required. Articles should contain between 1,000 and 1,800 words and should be presented in a clear and concise form. Approved articles will be published at fordhampoliticalreview.org on a rolling basis. Submissions can be sent to dyoung2@fordham.edu.
The Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University is sponsoring its sixth annual Undergraduate Ethics Symposium, April 11-13, 2013. The forum is shaped around a series of workshops in which students present their best analytic and/or creative work on a subject of ethical concern. This year the theme of the Symposium is "Ethics and the Environment"; however, submissions on all areas of ethical concern - such as personal morality, business ethics, bio-medical ethics, media ethics, feminist ethics, and diversity issues - are welcome so long as the submissions are received by the February 1, 2013 deadline. Casa Bayanihan, Santa Clara University's alternative study abroad program in the Philippines, is now accepting applications from theology majors and minors for the Fall 2013 semester. Beginning with sustained accompaniment of the poor, the Casa Bayanihan program integrates practical experience into rigorous academic reflection and supports this reflection through a carefully structured web of spiritual and communal support. This fall will feature a great Philosophy/Theology course taught by Fr. Mark Ravizza, S.J., "Suffering, Solidarity and God." The application deadline for this program is March 13. The National Board of Directors of TAK invites entries for the 2013 Annual Albert Clark Award Sponsored by Theta Alpha Kappa, given annually to one undergraduate and one graduate student for the best papers in religious studies or theology, as judged by a panel established by the board. Each competition winner will receive a $500 award, and his or her essay will be published in the Journal of Theta Alpha Kappa. The competition is open to any student currently enrolled in or graduated from a school with a TAK chapter, provided that the paper was written while attending that school. It is also open to alumni members of TAK. Papers should be submitted through a TAK chapter moderator. Deadline for submission is January 10. The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal (FURJ) invites submissions for its third issue. Submissions may include original research articles, short research communications, book reviews, and review essays. This year's deadline for submissions is January 14. Creighton University's Magis Catholic Teacher Corps is currently accepting applications for 2013. They are looking for young people who are considering a vocation in Catholic education and who are committed to teaching full time, living in a Christian community, and growing in their faith through Ignatian spirituality. Participants will earn a master's degree in higher education, school counseling, or educational leadership. They will also teach for two years in under-resourced Catholic schools in Nebraska and South Dakota in urban, rural, and American Indian reservation settings. The application deadline is March 1. Undergraduate Theology majors Caitlin Ramiro and Andrew Steffan were selected to attend Harvard Divinity School's Diversity and Explorations Program in November 2012. This competitive program provides participants with an opportunity to explore opportunities in graduate theological education.

Seniors: City Year is now receiving applications for the position of corps member. Corps members work as tutors and mentors for 10 months in public schools across the country. Benefits include a $5,550 educational award for student loans or graduate study, access to graduate scholarships specifically for City Year alumni at more than 50 schools, bi-weekly living stipend, and federal loan forbearance. Trinity College’s Irish School of Ecumenics has a semester long study abroad program for undergraduates focusing on Conflict, Peace, and Reconciliation located at their cross-border school in Belfast. Students can apply for either one semester in Belfast or an entire year by adding an additional semester in Dublin. Helen and Norman Burg Ethics Prize
The Center for Ethics Education awards the annual Helen and Norman Burg Ethics Prize to the best undergraduate and graduate student papers on an ethics-related topic produced within the previous 12 months.

Dorie Goehring (FCLC’13) had a very full summer. Besides going on a GO! Trip to Ghana, she interned at the Unitarian Universalist Office of the United Nations, where she was named a delegate to the UN Youth Assembly conference, the UN World Youth Day conference, and the UN Youth Representatives working group. She served as a research assistant to Professors Hornbeck (Theology) and Beaudoin (GSRRE) on their project on Catholic “deconversion” and also contributed research for a workshop by Professor Jeanne Flavin (Sociology and Anthropology).

FCRH student Brian Pinter published his essay "Words from the Wise" in the June 2 edition of the London Tablet.
Theology major Michael Prate (FCRH '14) was awarded an Undergraduate Fellowship from the Fund for Theological Education to support his theological research toward clarifying his vocational interests. The Fellowship provides a $2000 stipend and covers all expenses for a summer conference focused on cultivating commitments to theological education and ministry.
Fordham's Center for Ethics Education is sponsoring the Dr. K. York and M Noelle Chynn Fordham Undergraduate Essay Prize in Ethics and Morality. In 1,000–1,500 words, essayists are encouraged to raise questions, single out issues and identify dilemmas of personal or social significance that they have encountered. Essays may include reference to published scholarship, but must be original, unpublished work that reflects the essayist's individual voice. First prize is $1,000. The submission deadline is April 25. Additional information is available here.
From June 11 to June 22, the University of Virginia is offering a two-week course on "The Religions of Abraham: Sources of Peace and Conflict." The second week of the course includes participation in in “The Music of Scripture: The 2012 Scriptural Reasoning Training Tour” through western Virginia. More information is available here.

Bob Najdek (FCLC class of 2012) was accepted to the Master of Arts program at Union Theological Seminary.
This summer, the Jesuit Universities Humanitarian Action Network (JUHAN), of which Fordham is a founding member, will host its third biannual conference, “Global Perspectives on Humanitarian Action,” from June 12-15, 2012 at Fairfield University. Students will learn the leadership and advocacy skills needed to be effective leaders, focusing on the field of humanitarian action and the ethical preparation of humanitarian professionals in responding to crisis and complex humanitarian emergencies Due to a generous grant, the Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs is able to send 10 undergraduate student delegates to participate in this intensive conference. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are all eligible. Students will be selected through an application process. Commonweal Magazine is seeking interns for spring and summer 2012. The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline, as well as those who have completed degrees in the past two years. They are looking for applicants who can demonstrate active engagement with the intellectual life of the Catholic Church and a commitment to journalism and writing. Applicants should send a letter describing their interest, their religious background, and their familiarity with Commonweal, and should detail their academic and writing qualifications (including writing samples if relevant).
