Curriculum Vitae

Jennifer Illig attended Molloy College is Rockville Centre, NY where she majored in theology and English and minored in history. Both the theology department and the English department were very small and a number of the faculty were cross-appointed which allowed her to explore the influence of theology on literature and the way that literature formed a person’s theological outlook. Coming to Fordham to pursue a Master’s degree, Jennifer was interested in using her background in literature and particularly Middle English to better understand the theological climate of late medieval England. When Dr. J. Patrick Hornbeck first introduced her to lollard texts, she had found her niche. Her dissertation “Through a Lens of Likeness: Reading English Wycliffite Sermons in Light of Contemporary Sermon Texts” argues that the largest Middle English sermon collection written by the late fourteenth century followers of the posthumously condemned heretic John Wyclif is very much like other late medieval sermon collections in the spiritual formation it provides.
