Letter from the Director

Over half the world's population now lives in urban areas. Global rates of urbanization and the social, economic, and environmental challenges of vast metropolitan regions have escalated exponentially. The metropolis is also a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural place where people from all over the world share the norms and values, the everyday encounters, and the spaces of urban life. All of this produces immense challenges.

Our purpose in designing the Master's Program in Urban Studies is to provide future leaders with an outstanding interdisciplinary, humanistic approach to the city and the urban experience. It is a unique program that moves away from conventional disciplines and instead offers an integrated, innovative curriculum. The Program broadens and deepens student understanding of the interconnected dimensions of metropolitan development and encourages them to think creatively about the future of cities and their urban regions. It is ideal preparation for a wide variety of successful careers.

Fordham is privileged to share a history and a destiny with New York City. This great metropolis is our main laboratory for exploring the complexities of the urban world. We also take the international dimension as a vital part of the Master’s Degree Program. It is an opportunity for new perspectives on the city and new solutions to the challenges of the future. The Urban Studies Program’s growing partnerships with universities in various regions of the world allows students to attend courses, earn credit, do fieldwork and research directly with experts internationally in their area of interest.

Our goal is to make students’ experiences in the Urban Studies Master’s Program as successful as possible. As you learn about the details of the program, please do not hesitate to contact me directly to discuss any questions you may have. (
