R.S.H.M. From Across the Globe
Celebrate Marymount’s Centenary Year
With joy, sadness, affirmation
and gratitude for a life well lived, the Religious
of the Sacred Heart of Mary celebrated the 100 years of Marymount College, Tarrytown, with solemn evening vespers in Butler Memorial Chapel
in Marymount Convent on Friday, Dec. 7, and a Mass at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan on Dec. 8. We were joined in these celebrations by alumnae/i and friends of the College, representatives
of our fellow R.S.H.M.-founded educational institutions here in the United States, as well as from Colombia, England, France, Italy and Mexico. Our sisters in Brazil, Portugal and Africa were with us in spirit.
Sr. Rosamond Blanchet, ’62, provincial of the Eastern American Province and Sr. Catherine Patten, ’61, general councillor of the R.S.H.M. Institute, spoke words of gratitude and optimism about the
continuing educational thrust of the R.S.H.M.
mission in schools and parishes and with immigrants,
especially women and children. They both gave credit to Mother Marie Joseph Butler, who founded Marymount, describing her as “a woman of vision, courage and simplicity; a deeply committed religious with a gracious manner and a great capacity for loving leadership.”
The R.S.H.M. will continue the centenary year with a celebration Mass and lecture on Saturday, May 31, at Marymount Convent, 32 Warren Ave., Tarrytown, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A complimentary lunch will be served. Susan Ross, Ph.D., professor of theology at Loyola University, Chicago, will deliver a lecture titled “For the Beauty of the Earth: Women, Sacramentality and Justice.” If you are interested in attending, please get in touch with me at (914) 332-7483 or
mflannelly@fordham.edu by May 21.
