From
the plaque designating the adminstration
building a Landmark: "This
Greek revival manor house was built from
1836-38. The random ashlar structure has
on of the finest entrance porches in New
York City. The fluted Ionic columns and
square corner posts support a superbly proportioned
full entablature. Fordham takes its name
from the manor of Fordham, granted in 1671
to John Archer by the British royal governor
of New york, Francis Lovelace. In 1839 the
property was acquired by the right reverend
John Hughes for use as a seminary and college.
